Inside the former PodgΓ³rze ghetto, KrakΓ³w.

This is another view of BolesΕ‚awa Limanowskiego, the street that ran through the middle of the ghetto.

At its eastern end, the school – which still stands – was used by the ghetto authorities to store dental and other medical equipment as well as books.

I'm seriously thinking of expanding on my Shoah Images website to create a book of my contemporary photographs of Holocaust sites etc, with a bit more of a written accompaniment to each one. The photos will lead the story as it were. Any book publisher/agent willing to help/support me here?

PΕ‚aszΓ³w. These are the ruins of the imposing Jewish pre-burial hall. Only partially destroyed by the Germans – who used part of the building as a morgue – the Polish authorities completed the job in the aftermath of war.

KrakΓ³w’s famous Old Synagogue can be found at the southern end of one of the district’s main streets, like a counterpart in Lublin, also called Szeroka. The area formed a backdrop to ghetto scenes in Steven Spielberg’s β€˜Schindler’s List’.

Drancy, in the Parisian suburbs, was an internment camp initially for foreign Jews. In the period between 22nd June 1942 and 31st July 1944, 64,759 people were deported from here in 64 separate transports. The destination for most was Auschwitz. Four went to SobibΓ³r, one to the Baltic.

KrakΓ³w’s High (or Tall) Synagogue – so-called because it was, literally, the city’s tallest synagogue. During the Holocaust, the Nazis stripped bare the interior of the building. The ceiling, as well as the roof, was also destroyed.

One entrance to the PodgΓ³rze ghetto in KrakΓ³w. The street is called BolesΕ‚awa Limanowskiego and it ran east-to-west through virtually the entire ghetto area. A gated and guarded entrance would have been seen approximately where the lorry is positioned in the centre of the photograph.

Ulica PrΓ³ΕΌna in Warsaw. The city had Europe’s largest Jewish community before the war. Indeed, only New York, globally, had larger. More than 300,000 people and 300 synagogues tell only part of the story of a city buzzing with Jewish life and culture.

The β€˜Stolpersteine’ (β€˜Stumbling Stones’) Project, created by artist Gunter Demnig, identifies former Jewish homes across Germany and wider afield. It also commemorates other victims of the Nazis. Here, in Berlin, the home of the Salinger family is immortalised by four brass plaques on the pavement.
