$8.75M Investment Supports βResearch Resilienceββ¦ | Maryland Today
UMD, MPower Funds Combine to Help Preserve Institutional Capabilities, Lab Operations and More
We @uam-umd.bsky.social won. Faculty packed town halls, talked to their colleagues and collected hundreds of petition signatures. Now UMD is coughing up $8.75m, during a deficit, to fund faculty whose research is under attack. Not enough, but a helluva thing for a union the state calls illegal.

Corporations are rolling out new AI tech that may technically comply with data privacy laws, but opens up new ways to control and exploit workers.

If there's one piece of research that came out in the last year that I think all housers should read, it is probably this brief.
*Affordable AND available* and the need for more income-restricted *deeply* affordable housing for those most vulnerable to housing instability, eviction, & homelessness.

Frustrated by NIMBYs, states are trying to force cities to build affordable housing
Utah's leaders worry skyrocketing home prices are keeping young people from creating wealth. It's among a growing number of states β red and blue β passing laws to promote more affordable places.
"...In recent years, the state has amped up both the carrot and the stick, passing laws to encourage development and to enforce its mandate. Towns and counties now have to pick a handful of ways to create denser, cheaper housing and report on their progress every year."

New fact sheet on Fair Chance laws - TLDR, there is immense variation in how jurisdictions are trying to open doors to housing for people with criminal records through fair chance approaches. For researchers - an opportunity to test how approach affects outcomes! www.urban.org/research/pub...

Trump's Big Ugly Bill Is a Loss for Housing
The tax bill includes big increases in housing funding. But its other provisions are so harmful that the affordable housing field should not be celebrating.
Any housers who celebrate this bill are showing that they only care about their piece of the LIHTC industrial complex and not the people they purport to serve. My latest editorial for @shelterforce.bsky.social.

Great news - automatically sealing records is a great first step for more equitable tenant protections! Point of sealing or more legislation around tenant screening reports can help make these laws more impactful too! housingmatters.urban.org/articles/aut...

I'm hoping to see more Apartment and Landlord associations mobilizing against the proposed cuts. The rent only eats first when families are actually eating. Cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, and the safety net will exacerbate the huge challenge of unaffordable housing and past-due rent.
