PLP 1.1: Introduction to Programming Languages
Launching my Programming Language Pragmatics talks! These short, accessible talks cover the material in the textbook, the 5th edition of which I wrote with Michael L. Scott. The first one introduces the topic and talks about why we study programming languages!

I suspect the answer is that you are vastly underestimating your capabilities and at least somewhat overestimating those of others.
the rapid shot-in-the-dark suggestions are "helpful" if (a) you don't know what exactly you're shooting at and/or (b) you aren't very quick at shooting by yourself.

If you're interested in editors and developer tools, consider applying to Jane Street! It might be an especially good fit if you're an excited vim or vscode user who would love working on making those experiences better for a den of functional programmers.

as someone from Utah, I can tell you BYU-H has a very different reputation from the other two. I'm surprised the data show the skew as being *that* far, but I'm not surprised it's significantly different from the other two.

All this is true, but the new code *won't* be a perfect replacement. It'll just be broken and buggy relative to the current system, miss a bunch of edge (or common) cases, and they'll just yell at anyone who says "doesn't work for me"βespecially the poor, indigent, un-shiny mass of real humans.

We will not be distracted.
We will not be discouraged.
Weβve got our eyes on the prize.
And we will build the prosperous, free nation for all that we deserve.
The time to organize is now.

AOC and Bernie in front of the rally crowd in Denver
Zoomed out crowd shot of 34,000 people in downtown Denver with Colorado mountains in the background
Tonight an unbelievable **34,000 people** gathered for our Denver rally to take on billionaires and win our country back.
This was the largest political gathering in Denver since Obama in 2008.
Also bigger than the 2024 DNC.
And the largest ever rally in Bernieβs career (and obviously, mine too).

if I recall correctly, he recently pitched an actual Squid Games-esque competition show to pit poor people against each other for the chance to win money, so more or less he's the distillation of exploitative capitalist influencer culture

his main thing these days is exploiting people less fortunate than himself to generate "content", like he'll set up a chocolate box at a store and the first person who picks one up wins $1k or whatever, but he'll end up making more from the ad revenue and related merchandizing

I was going for an x-ray of the Racket logo. maybe revealing the stylised lambda had bones. The steal your head logo with the lambda inside a skull was the closet option. Fun fact - this logo is inspired by a grateful dead graphic that has a lightening bolt inside the skull

The Inside Racket seminar seeks to expose the internal design and implementation of Racket features. It features Racketeers give a low-level walkthrough of the code that implements an important Racket feature. 1/3

yeah that's generally been my experience, or else things like this are sometimes linked in the text of a paragraph midway through yet another email including important things like "new AI art initiative" and "why grad students should be grateful" or whatever other nonsense they highlight

- a railroad crossing
- the corner of an intersection
these are all different answers and nobody told me it was open-note, so I failed π

I like the phrasing of "whatever we gain from Greenland" β it's a foregone conclusion that we will annex a whole other country against their will, even though we clearly have absolutely no idea what value that would bring to us.

I also am not aware of any official university statements on the conflict that take any political stance; do you have any in mind? everything I've seen is of the nature of "we want a safe school environment, Antisemitism and Islamophobia are both bad, free speech is important but don't get rowdy".

this depends an awful lot on what is meant by "political". like is it political to want people to have free + clean drinking water? I would say no, but many voters of the current administration would disagree. free post? social welfare? these things are all "political" these days.
