Ok so I had an accidental cannibalism theme in my september reading, & this is just continuing this trend of my favorite authors writing the one thing I’ve always said I can’t handle reading. They’ve all been so good & horrifying so far, I have high hopes here lol

Cinder House, by Freya Marske!
This is cheating, I started it today already & it’s predictably fantastic so far. Also deeply concerned with the body, that’s my theme for the fall.
Bonus for 2 Caitlin Starlings in a row- The Graceview Patient + The Starving Saints!
The mutual vibe here is claustrophobic, deeply unsettling, all too aware of one’s body. Hospitals, castles under siege, either way, reality is a matter of opinion. I’m glad I’ve got a bunch more Starling to read!
Intermezzo by Sally Rooney!
Ok why have I not read any Sally Rooney til now, how embarrassing. This was what I wanted every time I search “books that feel like reading em forster” and get frustrated that Google doesn’t understand my heart~. god this book was good.
The Place of Shells by Mai Ishizawa, translated by Polly Barton!
This book made my heart ache and had me googling all kinds of things I didn’t know (saints, tsunamis, German geography) and I will definitely keep thinking about it for a long time.
We Live Here Now by C.D. Rose!
I saw “Calvino meets Borges” and said yes please. It’s unnerving & surreal & lingering, and surprisingly funny. I love this kind of book.
Other books I’ve loved relatively recently-
Spread Me by Sarah Gailey! I went in very “ok this sounds…weird, but I’ll bite, I will read anything Gailey writes” and by George it was weird and horny and so well written.
Fantastic book, as always from Harrow, but I also really loved getting to hear her talk about it at a signing while 3/4 of the way through already & low-key scared to finish 😅 plus the physical object that is this book is so beautiful!! The illustrations! The spredges! The jacket art! God I love it.

And then I avoided finishing it for weeks because I *knew* it would emotionally destroy me. I finally finished it last night and guess what, I was right *but it was worth it*.
