HB 4587 is up for a committee hearing in House Education TODAY (2/23) at 1 pm.

This bill would prohibit state funds, including student financial aid, from supporting certain "low-earning" degree programs. This puts the arts, humanities, social services, and other public interest programs at risk.

Voter Information For DOJ ‘Not Gonna Happen,’ Says Warner - West Virginia Public Broadcasting The West Virginia Secretary of State has declined to turn over personal voter registration data to the U.S. Dept. of Justice.

Personal information from registered West Virginia voters will not be turned over to the United States Department of Justice, said Secretary of State Kris Warner.

HB 4600 is on second reading in the House on Monday, Feb. 9th at 11 am. It changes the deadline for County Clerks to receive absentee ballots to 8 pm on Election Day. It also changes the deadline to request an absentee ballot from 6 days before Election Day to 13 days.

🎬 Legislative Recap: Week 3

Delegate Evan Hansen provides an update about the bills being run by the Republican supermajority, as well as some positive news about the number of Democrats filing for office!

"West Virginia is the only state where household income has actually declined after adjusting for inflation, dropping from 28th ($56,161) in 1970 to 49th ($55,948) — only Mississippi currently ranks lower ($54,203), according to the analysis."

Given the temperature in this country right now, the timing of this bill from Senator Oliverio sends a clear message as to where he stands on this issue, and who he feels needs protection.

This bill fits into the narrative of other bills and laws introduced in other Red states, and those laws are already being challenged in courts for being ambiguous and infringing on civil rights.

While this bill does not aim to protect ICE alone, given West Virginia Governor’s commitment to Trump that this state will back ICE, this bill could allow ICE and other first responders to function in the darkness instead of under the public eye.

This bill will be used to weaken transparency at a time in this country, when it has been critical in holding federal agencies accountable for misconduct.

The bill's lead sponsor, Mon County Republican Senator Mike Oliverio, wants you to believe that SB 4’s goal is to enhance public and first responder safety, but what it really aims to do is limit accountability and public oversight at moments when transparency matters most.

Today (1/29), the State Senate voted 32-2 to advance SB 4, with Democratic Senators Joey Garcia and Mike Woelfel voting in the minority.
