The current GOP is a death cult, and concessions to its agenda will cause more suffering, and more death.

If Ezra Klein wants the party to open up on the right, he also needs to be specific about what of the GOP platform we should adopt:

- which kids are to be gunned down
- which women are to die in childbirth
- which minority to take civil rights from
- which immigrants to be locked down in camps

Every Dem should (1) read this and (2) be highly skeptical

This seems to come from an alternate universe where Dems have been running DSA candidates in red states rather than the moderate military vets and pastors they've actually been running in these places to win crossover votes.

The Overton window opened a little left (AOC, Mamdani) and by a billion miles to the right.

The VP openly mingles with Nazis. An internal army is policing Americans. Civil rights are being dismantled.

But it went wrong. Democrats became more uncompromising on immigration and lost support among Hispanic voters. They moved left on guns and student loans and climate, and lost ground with young voters. They moved left on race and lost ground with Black voters. They moved left on education and lost ground with Asian American voters. They moved left on economics and lost ground with working-class voters. The only major group in which Democrats saw improvement across that whole 12-year period was college-educated white voters.

Polls show that the percentage of voters saying the Democratic Party is too liberal increased sharply between 2012 and 2024. The percentage of voters saying the Republican Party is too conservative fell during that same period. Even the violence and corruption of Trump's second administration have not fully closed the gap: A September poll from The Washington Post and Ipsos found that 54 percent of voters thought the Democratic Party was too liberal and 49 percent thought the Republican Party was too conservative.

I would love to know, precisely, what in the Democratic platform has changed since 2012 to make it shift left.

What does moving left on race mean? On guns? In what way, specifically, are Dems now left leaning economically today than they were under Obama?

Every single time, it's a collection of people so bigoted that everyone in their life no longer wanted to be associated with them. Their partners left them, their friends stopped talking to them, their bigoted harassment gets them booted from social media. These are not good people.

I genuinely thought that as a trans woman, if ceded some points with the gender critical crowd we could have a healthier conversation and arrive at better public policy. The problem is, they are getting crazier and more extreme. If you admit "trans women don't belong in women's sports" they agree, but call you a man the whole time. If you admit, "I understand I am a biological man, but this is how I want to live my life and talking about me like this is degrading" they scream about free speech. If you admit that hurtful language is part of free speech but you don't have to associate with people that degrade you, they act like the victim and call you a man and then say you should be thrown in an insane asylum. It's like this on everything. They are incapable of looking for a middle ground on bathrooms. They want maximalist policies on everything. They'd throw a fully transitioned, fully passing trans woman in male prison genpop and laugh as she got aids from being raped. I want a middle ground on so many of these polices. BUT THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM IS THEY DO NOT. They enjoy degrading us, it's fun for them. So, sisters. I genuinely don't know what to do. I think many of our most extreme ideas are bad. But theirs are worse. So if I have to pick, I choose us. I wish there were a political vehicle for compromise and medical safeguarding. But that just simply does not exist.
