Except in this day and age, the more innings you pitch the more likely you will be to get wins as managers aren't keeping pitchers in who aren't in the lead.

Wins and innings are way more important than they are given credit for. Lefty in 1972 deserved the Cy even though his team was awful. Skenes is no Lefty at this point.
