Facts About GBBC

The event began in 1998 as an annual bird count in North America and runs each February.

A February count provides a snapshot of birds just before one of their annual migrations.

How to Participate Participating is easy, fun to do alone or with others, and can be done anywhere you find birds. Simply watch birds for 15 minutes or more, at least once over the four days and tell us what you see!

For me, Norman’s appeal, and that of villains generally, lies in authentically representing trauma survivors and giving them voice and agency. /11

When you tire of heroes with smooth-sailing lives and secure families, villains offer a sense of comfort. Villains like Norman become power fantasies for those with unhealthy upbringings, mirroring how trauma can push people into the villain role. /10

Why wouldn’t I want to fantasize about being powerful, about being impossible to dismiss? Someone who crushes obstacles, literally and figuratively, when faced with defiance. /9

This is why Norman Osborn appealed to me (long before Willem Dafoe's charismatic portrayal). It was because his backstory was relatable. Norman’s abusive father, his impoverished upbringing, and a brilliant man fated to suffer appealed to me far more than heroes like Spider-Man. /8

When you are hurt, you lash out, and you want everyone to understand your pain. Why? Because hurting is isolating. When you see others looking happy and well-adjusted with everything you ever wanted, or worse, they could have helped and refused, you want to burn them with everything else. /7

I have been to therapy, I am getting treatment, I am doing much better, but that is not the point of this. My intention here is to illustrate how these experiences have shaped my perspective. /6

While Norman is not depicted as a mentally well person, as someone who went through it with their c-PTSD, I get it. I have been misdiagnosed, been given the wrong treatment/unhelpful suggestions, taken off my medications, and gone through a host of other terrible things /5

C-PTSD is often misdiagnosed as other personality disorders, (Bipolar Disorder, Depression, ADHD, etc) . It includes anxiety, flashbacks or nightmares, trauma-related avoidance, heightened emotional reactions, and difficulties maintaining relationships. (Source: Cleveland Clinic) /4

While debate surrounds the rest of his mental state, prolonged trauma leads to c-PTSD. The current Spider-Man run highlights Norman grappling with untreated c-PTSD. Even before this arc, Norman’s emotional outbursts, relationship struggles, and flashbacks illustrate the lasting impacts of c-PTSD /3

Norman Osborn is a childhood abuse survivor with c-PTSD., so my relating to him hits hard. C-PTSD results from chronic trauma. It's hard not to resent other people when you're suffering and no one ever comes to rescue you, or worse, no one believes you. /2
