Clam shells sound warning of Atlantic β€˜tipping point'.
New research from @exeter.ac.uk using centuries-old clam shells has found signs that key Atlantic Ocean currents may be losing stability.

Attending the premiere of #Ocean with Sir David Attenborough, King Charles III, and the production team was surreal. It is a powerful wake-up call on how we treat the ocean and calls for concerted conservation efforts and sustainable fishing practices. A must-see film!

We're proud that our researchers played a role in giving scientific advice for β€˜Ocean’, the new film/book by Sir David Attenborough.
Here's some of the team at the film's premiere last night! Huge congratulations to all involved.

Baby sea turtles (about the size of your phone) were tracked using satellites and revealed that they don't just float about in the open water but actively swim towards or away from shallower areas.
And they really like hanging out in the Gulf of Mexico.

Great work @katrinaphillips.bsky.social! 🌍🦀πŸ§ͺπŸ¦‘

My colleagues at NOAA fear for their jobs.

Their satellite observation today of accumulating heat stress (already above mortality thresholds) on the northern Great Barrier Reef: Yet again a deadly mass coral bleaching event is underway.

Without NOAA, climate & reef scientists will be blind.

The little fish with a big impact: why sandeels are causing a stir The humble sandeel has made headlines after Britain and the EU butt heads over its protection. Why is this creature causing such controversy?

πŸͺΆ "It is a deep betrayal of our shared seas that the EU is continuing this challenge [...] driven by aggressive tactics from industry giants who lobby for short-term profit with scant regard for marine life." Our director @hugotagholm.bsky.social in Geographical πŸ‘‡

β€˜Hopeless and broken’: why the world’s top climate scientists are in despair Exclusive: Survey of hundreds of experts reveals harrowing picture of future, but they warn climate fight must not be abandoned

β€œWhat the fuck do we have to do to get through to people how bad this really is?”

As sea surface temperatures break all records and another global coral bleaching event is unfolding, 77% (n = 293) of climate scientists surveyed expect a global average temperature rise of at least 2.5 C.

Relationship between the prevalence of international trade controls and species harvest management across near threatened and threatened species affected by intentional biological resource use (minimum estimate) based on species with available data on conservation actions (those where the field is recorded as either unknown, yes, or no, rather than left blank). No data are available for cephalopods, cone snails, or corals (Appendix S15). Bony fishes, dicotyledons (dicots), and reptiles include selected higher-level taxa (Appendix S1)

I just came across this amazing figure comparing the degree to which exploited taxa are subject to harvest management and international trade regulation -- puts sharks 7 conifers in perspective as being under-manged nationally & internationally. πŸ¦‘πŸŒπŸŸπŸ§ͺ🦈
