An ABOVE NORMAL Atlantic Hurricane Season is the most likely scenario in the latest outlook from NOAA/NHC. The confidence in this is 50%, with 35% chance of near normal and 15% chance of below normal!

NOAA's 2025 Atlantic hurricane season outlook shows a 50% chance of above-normal activity, with 13–18 named storms, 5–9 hurricanes, and 2–5 major hurricanes.

Amazing! NWS will be allowed to fill 450 more positions after deep cuts from DOGE earlier this year. We knew those cuts were a critical mistake to begin with. It’s good to see this for the sake of public safety and to have more great jobs. NWS SAVES LIVES.

Welcome to August!! We are losing an increasing amount of daylight each day as we get later into summer. Places in the Panhandle will lose an hour of daylight by the end of August.

A blizzard isn’t just a snowstorm. To qualify, winds must be at least 35 mph, and visibility must be reduced to less than a quarter mile for at least 3 hours. Temperature is not a criterion, but those wind chills tend to be frigid!

This is a VERY large earthquake, possibly/probably among the 10 largest ever recorded. A clear subduction zone megathrust event. And it is another M>8.5 event with a notable foreshock (the recent M7.4 in same location), like Tohoku in 2011.

In fact, a "megatsunami" event occurred just 2 yrs ago, in 2023, when a massive rockslide caused a ~650 foot wave in a Greenland fjord. The resulting oscillation literally "rang the Earth" like a bell for 9 days! (The paper describing this is remarkable):

Unbelievable. Just days after the tragic flooding in Texas, NOAA is demanding that public TV stations remove equipment from towers that is critical for these stations to send weather alerts. Trump’s ideological crusade against public broadcasting will cost lives.
