I wonder if people are paying attention to how much their doom scrolling is cutting into time they used to use to read books

Opinion | Something Surprising Happens When Bus Rides Are Free

β€œIf free buses strike you as wasteful, you’re not alone. Plenty of the beneficiaries would be people who can afford to pay. Does it make sense to give them a freebie? Yes, if it improves the life of the city, just as free parks, libraries and public schools do.”

Dude got to retirement age and then realized he could spend the rest of his life hearing complaints that his work was unfinished or complaints that his finished work was shit. Not a hard choice.

I would bet he finished the series years ago but isn’t going to let the last two books out until he’s dead because he doesn’t want to spend his last days hearing from other nerds about how he ruined it

You should read the much shorter β€œFreedom of the City” by Charles Downing Lay to see a contemporary 1920s response to Moses’s planning strategies. It’s a wild, beautiful alternative parallel universe vision to Power Broker (that Moses crushed in the 1930s).

I’m convinced the lists of NY stuff in this book are there to lull you into Stockholm syndrome and force you into agreeing with Caro about his narrative. But also, big fan, it broke me.

This is new, it could be a good model for how we get things done as a community. Snow is a good test.

Of course I’m prepared for the blizzard- The smoker is clean, the pork butt is soaking up the dry rub, and the cook should finish up right as the first flakes start to stick

Pretty sure they’ve moved past the idea of using the Cherry Ave building for low-barrier shelter at this point, but haven’t completely firmed up what it will be used for

Gotta disagree. The city gov and local non-profits have struggled to get on the same page about the shelter and how to provide services. That’s very different from the NIMBYism that’s feeding the housing crisis locally.

So strange that the NYT webpage is putting their reporting on this story below reporting on bs threats over Greenland, a train crash in Spain, Chinese population trends, a dispatch from the food critic and the entire opinion section, while the opinion section claims civil war is starting

I don’t need to coordinate with a leftist to know that masked ICE agents shooting fleeing people are in fact scared little fascists who should be documented, shamed, and prosecuted for murder, not brave or enforcing laws or under attack by anyone

You can do a lot locally with a dedicated group of 15 to 40 people. Regular people should be thinking at that scale rather than at the scale of thousands.

I’ve hit 2500 miles this year on my gravel bike on the hilly local streets of Charlottesville. And then I went on vacation and rented a real road bike that had gears for climbing. Oh man, a whole new world when I get back to home.

I’m hoping two people bumped into each other walking on the pedestrian mall and someone fell down and they called 911 to check to be sure they were ok and somehow that got registered as a Traffic issue
