Probably going to close early today unless foot traffic spikes at 7. We did reduce the bake volume today so my leftover stock won't be as bad as last week. And we have marginally beat last Tuesday's embarrassing sales. But it's another rough Tuesday, following unusually poor weekend numbers.

Most dried herbs take up way more space than ground spices, too. I can get through 200-250 grams of onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, black pepper. They don't take as much space as a 100g pack of thyme leaves though!

The first one looks like ๅน but the second one doesn't quite match ๆŠœ to me. Looks more like ๆŸ but not quite. But as you said, illegible.

I see a fair amount of perplexed people online trying to translate the concept of ๅนใๆŠœใ‘(sometimes written ๅนๆŠœใ‘).

Here's some possibilities:

Also my staff member suggested that ใตใใฌใ‘(ๅนใๆŠœใ‘) (atrium) is likely the original Japanese word so it might be architecturally more interesting than average.

The toilet has a door (or portal?) to the void? I watched that show on Netflix. It's called "Extremely inappropriate" in English and the toilet is a portal between Showa and Reiwa eras.

Messaging one of my vendors: I need a large amount of dried thyme leaves (ใ‚ฟใ‚คใƒ ใƒ›ใƒผใƒซ)

100g or 1kilo?

Yikes. 100g is definitely enough. (I was trying to avoid a quote for those little 8-30 gram containers)

Also John Hughes movies probably made the 80s divide seem more serious than it actually was. I think there was just a lot of insecurity no matter which subculture/clique you were in and toxicity was the coping mechanism.

I figured out after the fact that many athletes had nerd-adjacent interests but the divide seemed worse in the 80s than what later generations reported. Worked with a fresh college grad circa 2009 who said tech geeks were just ordinary and even looked up to in HS.

Saw this poster in the train station that just shows place names and mid-20s (celsius) temperatures for various locations in Nagano and an idyllic meadow background image and realized that there's a brief window for marketing "summers that don't feel like death" until climate change fucks it all up

I used to spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to avoid financially rewarding awful people, and it's as exhausting as reading that dude's list. But also if I can avoid paying money to particularly egregious right wing wankers without it massively inconveniencing me, I'm gonna.

Some Japanese intellectuals, increasingly incredulous of the wartime state's announcements about the progress of the war, devised a technique called "article engineering" (kiji kลgaku ่จ˜ไบ‹ๅทฅๅญฆ) to cut through the lies.

Here's literary critic Kลshin Murofuse on his approach:

Economists, take note.

Bit of a supply chain disruption due to the tsunami threat over the last couple of days. My cheaper potato supplier wasn't able to deliver yesterday as scheduled, disrupting our prep schedule today. Hopefully we can squeeze it in tomorrow.

Yesterday was rough. Today my body and mind were not in the game. Started out well ahead of last Friday, then collapsed as the aftermNoon rains hit.

Rain cleared up, a half price sale for yesterday's bread cleaned us out of leftovers. Near disaster until a regular bought 11,000 yen of stuff.

Yesterday's sales were particularly brutal for a Thursday. Today's I would not call good, but trending above yesterday and last Thursday. Let's hope this doesn't completely kill the traffic the rest of the day.

I am ridiculously unmotivated today. It's partly because of just the accumulation of lack of rest. But the week was a down week and the typhoon is probably going to make a mess of the next few days. I'm baking bread I don't even know I can sell.

Just saw a 20 something Japanese woman take leave of her boyfriend/companion and hop over the train gates to catch her ride home. The gates started beeping, boyfriend scolded her and she shouted "bye, Baikin"

Oh yes, I'm in no way lamenting having cafe customers. That's meant to be our core money maker until I can get cheese production going. I just overshot demand for bread by a lot. Which means deep discounts tomorrow I expect.

I would like more of that. But it was mostly regulars. Or people referred by regulars. Two new customers came in excited about carrot cake just after the neighboring leather shopkeeper and two of his customers or partners came in.

Very Tuesday sales numbers (and yes, disappointing) but with an odd twist: way more cafe customers than bread customers. In fact, disturbingly little bread sold at all today.

Also had one customer who's son is going to Victoria, BC next week and was pleasantly surprised to find we have Nanaimo bars. And another who's son was visiting from Seattle and was curious about the whole Seattle style potato bread thing (so I named some bakeries like Macrina, Essential)

I commented that the problem with cheese in Japan is supermarkets.

Another customer, who's become something of a regular, and usually switches to English when she visits, realized that I was the baker she met at the poetry reading โ€ช@biankahbailey.bsky.socialโ€ฌ invited me to at Ryozan park last year

She ended up buying the gruyere and the guy bought cream cheese.

A woman & a man came in, possibly a couple though they paid separately. The man in search of cheese and the woman a cheese skeptic. I led with our scallion dill cream cheese on the crusty potato bread, which she loved. Then she tried gruyere, which she loved. And asiago, which she liked. A convert!
