Not sure what it was for me, maybe just atmosphere. Even the set-up of the flashback (story told by this person, who heard it from this, who heard from...) really set a Lovecraftian vibe for me

I was weird in not caring for the present-day stuff, but found the flashbacks utterly amazing

First book's the weakest, but I enjoyed it; love the series.

The difficulty's exaggerated: it's a bit much if you're expecting an easy breezy read, but people going in hearing it's the hardest thing ever tend to find that reputation overhyped.

There's a bunch of people who check out read-alongs to get a better idea of things (eg the Ten Very Big Books podcast).

Don't force yourself though. The first book's the weakest, but a lot of people never really with series
