What it comes down to is: Should beautiful, interesting, entertaining things exist in the world, and should we spend our time making them?

Completely agree with this point:

β€œClever engineers write clever code. Exceptional engineers write simple code.”

Back in when people wanted β€œninjas”, I said I wanted to be/wanted to work with gardeners. Ninjas come in and leave a bloody mess in the morning. Gardeners patiently cultivate.

Learning how to swim for the first time in my mid-30s. Still can’t breathe doing freestyle stroke, so I wear a goofy little snorkel to practice at the pool.

Oura ring: your biometrics continue to show major signs of something straining your body. Keep taking care and rest if you’re feeling low on energy.

Apple Watch: you lazy piece of shit. Take a look at how much of a piece of shit you are. You don’t deserve love.

The findings of two decades of profitability studies are equivocal: The majority of firms that conduct layoffs do not see improved profitability, whether measured by return on assets, return on equity, or return on sales. Layoffs are especially hard on the performance of companies with a high reliance on R&D, low capital intensity, and high growth. Market response to layoffs was also less positive than might be expected, with three-day share prices of firms conducting layoffs generally neutral. Higher valuations were given for layoffs perceived as helping firms in financial distress return to profitability as well as those that were strategic and forward-looking. Layoffs undertaken only for the purpose of reducing costs tended to lead to drops in share price.

Layoffs as they are done now, are scientifically proven to be unprofitable and IMO a symptom of the brain rot cause by, and fetishization, of 'tough decision making'

and when I say scientifically proven, check out this segment from the really eye-opening write-up from HBR: hbr.org/2022/12/what...

Talking in therapy about how joyous it is watching the baby develop attachments to certain toys and books, but also it’s heartbreaking how sad she is when she can’t find them, and my therapist just casually drops a nuke: β€œWith object permanence comes object loss.”

I would welcome a recommendation! Love historical or scientific non-fiction by Sarah Vowell, Susan Orlean and Mary Roach. Favorite fiction books include Lincoln in the Bardo, My Year of Rest and Relaxation, and Sorry for Disrupting the Peace. Short attention span/give up on books easily when bored.
