Drawn bar graph titled: Make friends with more spiders. 50k known spider species as one bar graph, and basically invisible bar graph showing number of spider species that could be harmful to humans is 50. Data from Ologies: ARANEOLOGY (spiders) with Marshal Hedin.
Listening to @ologies.bsky.social is always a delight.
Spiders have always had bad PR and itβs time to end this spider hate nonsense.

A podcast called Unofficial Hype, where each episode is a different guest who has the mission to be the unofficial hype person for a hobby or interest.
Their job is to convince an apathetic listener to get into something through the sheer power of their enthusiasm.

Magic 8 Ball, will I find some good podcasts this year?

βCopying others is a good way to start. Copying yourself is a disappointing way to end.β
βIf your opinions on one subject can be predicted from your opinions on another, you may be in the grip of an ideology. When you truly think for yourself, your conclusions will not be predictable.β
βYou can be whatever you want to be, so be the person who ends meetings early.β
βDonβt be the best, be the only.β
βTo have a great trip, head toward an interest rather than to a place. Travel to passions rather than destinations.β
Itβs a very short read and worth checking out I think:
βExcellent Advice For Livingβ by Kevin Kelly
Itβs full of tweet length pithy advice. Some is just ok, but some are great that I still think about all the time.

03.01.2025 21:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I feel foolish for not doing this way sooner, but hereβs a little tip for readers out there who like to highlight things but also like to read physical books.

It feels good to consume things.
But when all I do is consume, I feel like something is missing.
My goal for 2025 is to sustain a healthy give and take between consuming and creating.
Books changed everything βFor 99 percent of the tenure of humans on earth, nobody could read or write. The great invention had not yet been made. Except for firsthand experience, almost everything we knew was passed on by word of mouth. As in the children's game "Telephone," over tens and hundreds of generations, information would slowly be distorted and lost. Books changed all that. Books, purchasable at low cost, permit us to interrogate the past with high accuracy; to tap the wisdom of our species; to understand the point of view of others, and not just those in power; to contemplate-with the best teachers-the insights, painfully extracted from Nature, of the greatest minds that ever were, drawn from the entire planet and from all of our history. They allow people long dead to talk inside our heads. Books can accompany us everywhere. Books are patient where we are slow to understand, allow us to go over the hard parts as many times as we wish, and are never critical of our lapses. Books are key to understanding the world and participating in a democratic society.β Carl Sagan - The Demon-Haunted World

Like I see a substack that looks interesting but is SO LONG and I say who has time for this, but then it has hundreds of comments.
Continued tradition of grabbing library books for each other as part of our gift giving.

Putting the amount of podcasts (and our galaxy) in perspective:
If you take ALL THE PODCAST EPISODES and you send one ep to each star in our Milky Way, you would run out real fast.
In fact, close to 0% of stars would get ANYTHING.
So some say there are too many podcasts, but I say we need more!
I have a crazy prediction about podcasts in 2025:
There will continue to be more good shows than you possibly have time to listen to.
