unnnnbelievably hyped for project hail mary, I devoured that book faster than any other in my life and the trailer looks like everything I'd want from it. we got puppets. we got Ryland grace being a bit pathetic. we got cool unexplainable world ending problems. 9 months????? unbearable

by far the best colour calibration screen is the one where it asks you to make the grey bits look grey. and I'm like. well compared to the rest of the screen they do. that's what we in the biz call colour relativity. does not solve the problem though

My favourite part of having multiple devices with screens is that none of them display colour accurately so I can never tell if the thing that looks fine on my drawing tablet is being misrepresented by my phone, my laptop, or, in fact, the drawing tablet. And colour calibration hasn't even helped!

A (terrible) comic. PANEL 1: Emma looks at her watch. “What! It’s JUNE 24th already?” PANEL 2: “That means it’s MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY! how does it sneak up on me every year?” PANEL 3: “participation is SIMPLE. just make a comic! It doesn’t have to be funny or insightful or beautiful or interesting. make something for the joy of making it and if you feel it going wrong just trust yourself and keep going!!!” PANEL 4: “make a comic and don’t stop until it’s made!” PANEL 5: “remember that ole MAKE A TERRIBLE COMIC DAY saying, ‘if you want to make something GREAT, you need to start by making something TERRIBLE.’” PANEL 6: “or the other saying, ‘YOUR PARTICIPATION IS COMPULSORY!’ Stop thinking and get to work!”

An illustration of the asteroid belt as a dense donut-shaped ring of yellow points with the Sun at the center. The background is black with hints of dark blue in the corners and small white pinprick stars sprinkled throughout. A small illustrated Earth sits to the left of the Sun, and a semi-opaque, cone-like teal triangle extends from Earth toward the right. The cone opens up to a mosaic of a couple dozen small, square-like shapes representing Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera’s detector area. The mosaic is overlaid onto a portion of the asteroid belt, and each tile represents a camera image that detects a group of asteroids.

In addition to these never-before-seen cosmic neighbors, Rubin detected another ~1800 previously-known asteroids, bringing the total detections to just under 4000 in just 10.5 hours!🔭🧪

In other words, over half of Rubin's first detections are new discoveries☄️

A sprawling, textured field of galaxies scattered across the deep black of space. It is filled with the delicate smudges and glowing cores of galaxies of many shapes, sizes and colors, as well as the bright multi-colored points of stars. The image focuses on a collection of interacting galaxies connected by delicate streams of stars. At top center lies a large elliptical galaxy that is dense and smooth, like a polished stone glowing with golden light. Like delicate spider silk or stretched taffy, these stellar bridges link the large elliptical to the few larger galaxies beneath, evidence of past collisions.

All throughout the image, thousands of galaxies gather in clusters or are spread throughout, like glittering gems strewn on a table. Some are sharp-edged and spiral, like coiled ribbons; others round and diffuse, like polished pebbles. Still others are just smudges of various colors against the black of space. The background is peppered with pinpoint stars in reds, yellows, and blues, crisp against the velvet black.

A cosmic tapestry of glowing tan and pink gas clouds with dark dust lanes. In the upper right, the Trifid Nebula resembles a small flower in space. Its soft, pinkish gas petals are surrounded by blue gas, and streaked with dark, finger-like veins of dust that divide it into three parts. It radiates a gentle, misty glow, diffuse and soft like the warmth of breath on a cold hand. To the lower left, the much larger Lagoon Nebula stretches wide like a churning sea of magenta gas, with bright blue, knotted clumps sprinkled throughout where new stars are born. Both nebulae are embedded in a soft tan backdrop of gas that is brighter on the left than on the right, etched with dark tendrils of dust and sprinkled with the pinpricks of millions of stars.

Something I noticed this series was that every plot point took a full 10 minutes whether or not it needed to. The last half hour of that episode was no different.

For now on I propose that instead of categorizing #exoplanets by their properties, we do it by how cool they are. I propose 5 categories. From best to worst: 1) Proxima b. 2) Cool planet. 3) Random space rock. 4) Probably doesn't exist. 5) K2 18 b. Simpler and 100% more judgemental. Win-win.
