Whether that new context is fucked up like Aki (more likely) or heartwarming like Power I think that second recontextualized appearance needs to be after Denji has been allowed to come to terms with however he felt about Yoshida under the impression that he’s gone.

oh, and I think there’s a purpose behind the two-part format here too. It’s so Denji (when we next see him in his human form) can be honest about his feelings about Yoshida now that he’s truly dead and gone (as far as he knows) and only after that point can Yoshida re-enter in his new context.

I think Rank-Up Magic was meant to be something similar in terms of evolving Xyz monsters but they kind of stopped that design space after the anime ended

I don’t think Denji will do this of his own volition, unless we see some real surprising self-reflection from him we don’t have much precedent for. Things WILL get to that point unless an outside force intervenes

I may just be defeatist but I just don’t see him getting any better, there is no mystery character coming to change his worldview, it’s just this but worse and worse forever, and I think it would be a kinder fate to see him dead than that.

These two will not save each other, Denji will enable Yoru and Yoru will enable Denji and Asa will be ignored, placated until she can be silenced again, and used for sexual pleasure. I’d prefer Denji die than see him reduced any further.

Denji is approaching that point for me, you could argue he’s already there. If it came down to Denji’s life or Asa’s safety from him, kill Denji every time. I don’t want to think he’s beyond saving but I can’t possibly imagine a way out for him at this point.

I have to wonder about that. How far can one actually go on good intentions and misunderstandings before they categorically ARE evil, no matter what they or the people around them think. A serial killer who kills as salvation is still an evil person, even if they don’t understand why.

One way I could really see Denji getting proper development to get past some of these issues is some sort of vision or dream of what these lives would actually be like. What he thinks he wants vs what he needs

Would I like a happy ending? Sure, as long as it’s well written. But I don’t see it anymore. He’s an abused, broken boy yes, but he is on the path to becoming a monster and I don’t want to see that happen to him. I’d rather he just be at peace in death.

I no longer believe Fujimoto has a happy ending planned for Denji. I think he will be forced to the end of his unhealthy coping mechanisms to the point where the best thing for the world and for Asa is to kill him for good. He’s accepted death at this point as seen with being okay with weaponization

If there isn’t a course-correction, and I see little reason to believe there will be (I’ve read Fire Punch in the interim) I would rather Denji die than have sex with Yoru (read: rape Asa), I would rather his misery be multiplied tenfold before that if it comes down to it.

I could not imagine after finishing part 1 and declaring Denji my favorite character in fiction that come 4 years later I would be of the opinion that the best thing would be for him to die.

Basically, it’s not out of the question, or even unlikely, that the month left could develop all three of those characters and use Haruka in some interesting ways a la Kobeni to Denji at the end of Part 1. The jump to a month is probably to better signal “We Are Entering The Endtimes Now”
