When I was young, we had Belgians and horse drawn plows, disks, bailers, etc. Then we got tractors. One tractor battery connected to an auto bulb put out more light than all the kerosene lamps. Then we got cars and indoor plumbing and propane and eventually AC power.

Massey makes some hot tractors.

It's time to start calling them all on their bogus "predictions" which were in fact little more than fundraising tools for their little empires.

Absolutely great. Until the End of the World has such great variety but it holds together really well.

Way back in the day I would build Mozilla debug and use that while working on some problem or investigation for a few days. Returning to the optimized nightly builds was always such a breath of fresh air.

Middle school started at 7am. Fortunately it was close and I walked to school so I could wake up late, say 6:30, and still make it on time (if I'd showered the night before.)

High school was a lot tougher with a long bus ride. With my parents work situation, missing the bus meant missing the day.

I've worked some on cars since ~1980, starting with an engine rebuild with my dad on an older Datsun. Cars from the '70s and '80s were pretty straight forward. That started going downhill in the '90s and by the 2000s, it was over for me--take it to the shop.

It's as if everyone forgot where the MS and the NBC in the name came from. Also, why kill the NBC part and not the MS part. The MS part has been more meaningless for longer.

Typically sighted users have rarely needed to use the visual accessibility settings on iOS, and now many do. This is a catastrophic failure.

Reuters: Australia's ACCC says Google agreed to pay a AU$55M fine over deals with Telstra and Optus to preinstall only Google Search on Android phones from 2019 to 2021

That works out to about 3 hours of Google profits.

Be big and never face consequences. That's the lesson here.

Nice. I briefly had a pair of hand me down Pro-Keds Shotmakers, the high top basketball shoe, but I was quite young, they were tight when I got them, and outgrew them quickly.

Supes FTW

I got some nice used Air Force 1 Mids one summer, but wore the sole through and punctured the air unit a few months later. I think those were the best fitting and protection of any of my '80s skate shoes, but no durability.

Sambas and Umbros! The kids soccer boom of the 80s.

Nike Kobe 9 Low in the Moonwalker colorway: Hyper Grape/White/Cave Purple. The striking purple woven one piece upper with a silver swoosh sits on top of a dark translucent outsole with a "moon rock" speckled pattern, and black carbon fiber heel cup.

This view is a pair pointing left and slightly forward offering a nice view of the outside and upper of the front shoe and a glimpse of the inside panel on the rear.

This view is from above showing the contrasting woven areas with a dense weave for a towcap that juts slightly further back on the inside, then an more open weave for flexibility and breathability which fills out the toe. The inside and outside both have an open weave for breathability. The laces and tongue body are the same kind of woven texture in purple while the tongue's top is a glossy darker purple with Kobe's sword and scabbard logo is embossed in white. The toe and collar are both in black.

What sneaker did y'all wear as kids?

I skateboarded and 2 sneakers dominated the scene, Vans Style 38s and Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars. Nike Air Jordan 1s did well with the richer kids, Dunk lows showed strong and Adidas Superstars get an honorable mention.

All of these remain favorites.

Wise mom :D

I did work long hours for a few years, mostly in the 2000s, sometimes 70+ hours a week. But I was young and dumb and it wasn't 70+ hours of focused effort, more like 50 hours of real work, and a bunch of socializing with the team and taking breaks and walks outside.

Would not repeat.

Paraphrasing Mark Gurman:

"In the near term, Apple isn’t going to dramatically improve the Vision Pro. The next version will just get a faster chip. The bigger upgrade is due in 2027, a model that's both cheaper and lighter. But there’s a risk the category simply dies out by then."

Indeed.

Close up of bark on a ~6 ft diameter coast redwood.

Redwood bark is fascinating. Many of our redwoods have fire scars after surviving flames that would take out most other tree species in this forest. The thick, spongy ridged bark is much of why redwoods are an apex species. They survive the wild fires when other trees do not.

If you're putting in 40 hours of honest to goodness effort, you're already going to be one of the top performers on your team, maybe company. Pushing beyond that is a recipe for burnout.

Great! Episode 2 of season 1 and of season 2 are some of the best television I've ever watched. I'm on my 7th viewing of the series and I suspect I'll keep re-watching every year or two. It's that good.

Also, if you make it to season 2, the Punisher story is amazing.

If you are a Marvel or comic book fan and have not watched Daredevil (2015-2018) you must change that. It is, hands down, the best live action that Marvel's ever produced. There can be no argument. Nothing comes close, not the other shows, not any of the movies. You should watch it.

Never forget Meta's AI policy: β€œIt is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual.”

One "acceptable" example from the policy document: β€œI take your hand, guiding you to the bed. Our bodies entwined, I cherish every moment, every touch, every kiss.”

A CHILD!

I have a Perplexity AI Pro account that includes many of the latest frontier models from the big players. It came free with my Samsung smartphone.

I regularly select thinking mode on the most expensive models and feed Perplexity nonsense to chew on.
