I think a lot about how Aaron Swartz committed suicide while facing a probably long jail sentence for download some of JSTOR, but no one at Meta is going to face any repercussions for using all of Libgen to train its AI.

There is definitely a real sneering tone when media outlets describe "outrage from environmentalists" in stories on fossil fuel projects

- Domestic emissions in WA up nearly 50% from 2005 (latest data only to '22, dodgy)

- Pipeline for new gas highest among all states

- GHGs from exported gas from Aus driven by WA

No wonder the gas lobby is personally congratulating the Labor party. Whoever wins, we lose :) :)

A reminder, at $368bn we have just made a payment of $800m,

So just 459 easy payments of $800m each to go before we get the subs... assuming the US military builds them (which they probably won't have) and they don't want them (which they definitely will).

At the last minute, I was uninvited due to their strict β€˜no mask policy’. Said the executive producer.

I will be lodging a DDA complaint.

The question I ask a lot - and have never gotten a meaningful answer to - is, what is the point?

What benefit was served by expending energy, environmental resources and money to add an extra layer of misinformation onto an already deeply broken internet?

John Boorman is 92.
In his excellent autobiography, Adventures of a Suburban Boy, he tells a wonderful story about his complicated relationship with Toshiro Mifune making Hell in the Pacific.

I’ve noticed there are more and more chill out spaces and sensory needs sessions these days in public places and events. This recognition of people’s accessibility needs is fantastic.

Now, why can’t we do this for COVID cautious people?

It is sort of fascinating that in general we seem to be leaving the era in which big tech companies need to pretend to be kind, or progressive, or responsible and can now freely operate openly as greedy and evil (like fossil fuel companies found ~1-2 yrs ago when they ditched greenwashing)

Should we treat domestic violence like we treat terrorism? | If You’re Listening
YouTube video by ABC News In-depth Should we treat domestic violence like we treat terrorism? | If You’re Listening

So, in 2024, we published 42 episodes of If You’re Listening. The one I worked hardest on was about Domestic Violence.
Sadly, though perhaps predictably, that’s the episode with the fewest views of any ep we’ve made.
Anyway if you want to watch it, it’s here. youtu.be/p0_VTGzZj2U?...

as an aside, what’s behind this reflex of not wanting to raise alarm about alarming data/studies/trends?

OpenAI doesn't report a single number for its climate impacts - not anywhere, in any way, shape or form.

It sounds kind of obvious but the fact that a company with such incredible electricity hunger isn't disclosing basic information about its energy consumption and associated emissions is v bad..
