AS results from a diagnosis because of screening though and it’s the most important part of reducing harms

Agreed. Using data for black men from the USA where there’s a totally different health care system is nonsense

I don’t believe that the other screening programmes have AS as an option
17.01.2026 11:15 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
I actually think it’s quite real and I literally interact with 100’s of men regularly. I do think better comms could help deal with it though. Telling people about the results of the PROTECT trial for example

I’m sure that’s right. There’s already a shortage of radiographers. That’s why I don’t think we’ll get population screening without significant investment but they should have planning first screening for the last decade and haven’t

We won’t get population screening without massive investment. Testing millions of men regularly and then potentially further tests/treatment is just not possible with the current infrastructure
17.01.2026 11:03 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
It’s not that easy though. Things have improved as far as overtreatment is concerned but inevitably some men who are told they have cancer, albeit very low grade that may never harm them, will find AS unacceptable and want radical treatment or suffer real stress and anxiety. It’s very nuanced!

The decision to screen men with BRCA without a plan to identify those men is also joke

Informed choice is fatally flawed

Agree re quack meds. Abiraterone is definitely not one of those. It’s very unfortunate that the current informed choice to getting tested is fatally flawed and leads to too many stage 4 dx’s particularly amongst those from poorer socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic minorities

I know the debate intimately. I’ve responded to the NSC consultation as one of the UK’s leading patient advocates and Trustee of Tackle. It is indeed a very nuanced debate but one that, without fail, never ever considers the harm of late diagnosis. It’s not death alone that needs consideration!

I know lots of people on it. No one seems to experience problems that are any worse than HT. My friend Kev has been on it as long as I have and run 4 Marathon De Sables in 10 years and doing his 5th this year. Significant side effects are quite rare
17.01.2026 10:17 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
I’ve been on it 8.5 years and had no worse side effects than I get from Prostap
16.01.2026 21:31 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
I was diagnosed stage 4 so too late for surgery. All I’ve had is hormone therapy (Prostap) and Abi. I swerved chemo

I’ve been on Abi for 8.5 years. In that time I’ve run London marathon, completed a 100km ultra marathon, run at least 5km per day for a full year. Like all drugs it has side effects but the positive is I’m still alive when I was given 2 years to live

Back at The Christie Hospital today for my latest prostate cancer test results.
After having been given 2 years to live 8.5 years ago my PSA is still undetectable and cancer completely stable.
We live to fight another day. KOKO my friends.

Every single right wing account on Twitter (so that’s 90% of accounts on there) was appalled by the decision to ban! Personally I think it was sensible to protect Villa fans and Birmingham residents given the reputation of their fans!
