S/F ratio is very simple to use and at a surprisingly high level predicts when a patient with sickle cell is likely to go to the ICU due to ACS.

Labor of love here, with so much with to do, but very glad to have it out in the world to discuss!

In sickle cell we have moved more towards calling it “transformative therapy” which I think patients and their families respond really well to.

Most importantly no provider would ignore pain.

I think we would be able to help patients get individualized care that for their lifestyle - with some taking the risks of gene therapy for a cure and others having a full range of oral and IV therapies to manage symptoms.

I think if that had happened we would be able to better prognosticate many different complications.

I spent some time thinking about what it would mean to have had a full complement of support and funding for sickle cell for many decades.

I am all for universal healthcare. But, let’s be honest about what it is and make it fair for everyone :)

And, interestingly, I recently learned that some states get $3x more per RVU than a lot of us blue states. So we aren’t just less represented but we are also paying for their medical care.

Sadly, not much has changed.

I did 30 hour shifts as a physician. I wouldn’t do it again at this age. Cory Booker is next level.
