Jenny Turner · What else actually is there? On Gillian Rose Love’s Work is the ‘existential drama’ of a postwar Jewish British woman philosopher, born in London in 1947, who...

‘We start life so full of life, with so much in us, so much more than we can ever comprehend. Then life itself knocks it out of us, and philosophy begins.’

In the latest issue, Jenny Turner reflects on the life and work of her former teacher, Gillian Rose:

Old review of a book -- apologies, on Mastodon I could give you the while text of it.

Jenny Turner's essay on Gillian Rose is excellent. In 1995 I had the somewhat awkward task of 'reviewing' Love's Work for The New Statesman. I still don't quite follow the thinking about the sources of 'power' in her work, esp. late on; glad the early lectures are now published.

I think it’s what p/s does outside of p/s that matters. There’s a wholesomeness to being unaware in wider culture. That’s the scale of the challenge. (I think)

Once, during an in-class “peer review” when suggestions and such like are shared, a PoliSci comparativist advised against speaking too slowly as “they might understand you”. Sad and true.

😜 Famous historical scene yadayada Jena in 1806 when Napoleon rode around triumphant-like yadayada and fanboi Hegel saw him and later wrote that he saw “the world spirit on horseback” yadayada
