I'm so fortunate to have three great arthouse cinemas near my home. Today I saw the 2007 Australian drama "Home Song Stories" at the Arc Cinema, the National Film and Sound Archive. Joan Chen stars as a mercurial Hong Kong nightclub singer relocated to 1960s Melbourne with her two children.

Don't you love it when you are drawn to a book because if its cover, but then it turns out to be a lovely book?

This week is the 40th anniversary of the terrific miniseries, "Deceptions". It's a glamorous, fast-paced romantic melodrama, filmed in England and Venice, about identical twins who trade places. Starting Stefanie Powers and Barry Bostwick, it has everything that was wonderful about escapist '80s TV.

There were many juicy roles for the ex-Charlie’s Angels during the 1980s, and one of Cheryl Ladd’s most complex (and unusual) was the true story miniseries A DEATH IN CALIFORNIA, co-starring Sam Elliott. It’s compelling, but not an easy watch. It first aired May 12-13 1985.

DEADLY INTENTIONS aired May 19-20, 1985. Michael Biehn is a psychopathic doctor who torments and tries to kill his wife Madolyn Smith.

There was a quasi-fictionalized 1991 sequel, with Harry Hamlin playing the doctor. It has a scene of Hamlin watching Biehn play him in the miniseries. Very meta!

It's 40 years this week since the miniseries LACE II first aired.

Quite an interesting case study in '80s era melodramatic miniseries for several reasons, but mostly because it proved how difficult it is to make lightning strike twice.

It's boring when people watch stuff to belittle it, but in recent years I have actually found myself not quite "hate" watching, but definitely watching stuff I don't like - & I don't know why! Almost exclusively these are reboots of older shows I liked. I'd never ridicule them publicly though :-)

I have this edition too. I feel fairly certain though that this picture of Victoria Tennant comes from Voice of the Heart.

The TV movie should have been a miniseries. It was still enjoyable but Sidney Sheldon doesn't really fit into a movie of the week!

Of course, I already have three copies of his book (including two paperbacks with miniseries tie-in covers), but I was thrilled to receive this second hand, first edition of "Deceptions" today. A great book that made a truly terrific melodramatic miniseries (which turns 40 later this year).

I so enjoyed participating in the commentary for Kino Lorber's Blu-ray of the 1988 miniseries of James Clavell's "Noble House".

Amanda Reyes provides commentary on each of the four episodes, with a different focus in each one. I join her in the final episode with a focus on the 1980s miniseries.

I just enjoyed re-watching this fabulous TV movie about country singer Dottie West, starring Michele Lee. It first aired January 22, 1995.

Lee wears West's actual stage costumes and performs several of her songs, including with West's frequent duet partner Kenny Rogers.

Well worth watching.
