Normally not a huge fan of characters going from a big laugh into a cry, but Marianne Jean-Baptiste does the most realistic one I’ve ever seen in HARD TRUTHS. Damn she’s good…

I always enjoy joining @matinee.bsky.social on his podcast, but I was doubly happy to reference Takashi Kitano's OUTRAGE trilogy while we discussed WARFARE. Wondering how? Give it a listen!

Say what else you will about MODESTY BLAISE, but the set and production design goes pretty hard sometimes...And Bogarde's oversized beverage glasses are amazing.

The contrast between BECOMING LED ZEPPELIN and PINK FLOYD: LIVE AT POMPEII is really striking. I've seen the PF before, but rewatching in the theatre made it feel brand new. The new LZ film (short of some good interview stuff) repurposes so much old footage that it felt like I'd already seen it.

Dirk Bogarde's super-cool glasses in Modesty Blaise

Dirk Bogarde's super-cool glasses in Modesty Blaise

MODESTY BLAISE is a teeter totter of a film as it bounces from horrible to pretty fantastic over and over - but it never gets better than Dirk Bogarde's glasses. Spectacular wardrobe choice.

Episode 339 – 2024 in Review Talkin’ 2024 at The Movies with guests Jo Ryan, Hillary Butler and Bob Turnbull

Had a lovely time joining @matinee.bsky.social in his year end podcast to share my top 5 films of the year (along with @filmhill.bsky.social and Jo Ryan). So many other films we didn’t get a chance to discuss - darn good year overall.

Bleeding walls at Immersive Van Gogh exhibit in Toronto

The Immersive Van Gogh exhibit was pretty decent, but I have to say I wasn’t fully prepared for the “And now we make the walls bleed…” moment. THAT was cool.

Alba from DELTA SPACE MISSION zapping alien tentacles.

Even though the animation in the 1984 DELTA SPACE MISSION is sometimes only a step above the old Rocket Robin Hood cartoons, the glorious colours, gorgeous background paintings and occasional inventive creatures make it a worthwhile 70 minutes. Leaves Criterion Channel tomorrow.

The new Mubi release WITCHES (by Elizabeth Sankey) had me expecting a doc on witchcraft in film. What I got was an incredibly personal set of stories about postpartum depression and psychosis related to the history of witches. Adds up to probably the most terrifying horror film of the year.

Essentially my thoughts as well. Great concept, super performance by Hoult, good tension, interesting moral quandary…But the jury room scenes were - given the grey areas of the rest of the film - NOT good. Hoult/Simmons characters good. Others were barely caricatures. Hurt rest of the film for me.

Yep. Nothing has quite hit the feels like that this year - except for maybe ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT (which is still one of my faves this year along with HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS).

Twenty minutes into THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF IBELIN and it’s already looking to be the biggest emotional wallop-er of the year (and without overt manipulation).

Good. Peppered with a smidge of existential dread like most other sane people, but good. Also, trying to remember how to use social media tools (thought my last post was a DM 🤦‍♂️)…
