The article ignores the impact of automation and AI, which many expect to deflate the demand for labor. We might see a simultanous decline of both, supply and demand of labor. Demography shrinks the number of workers, automation and AI the number of jobs.

EU’s shift to a US savings model risks dismantling its social contract
Political choices should be debated democratically, not hidden in technocratic agendas of ‘financing gaps’
Ive written about @ecb.europa.eu and @ec.europa.eu push for a Savings and Investment Union:
SIU, the new answer to 'how do we pay for' , is a Trojan horse for the American welfare model, increasingly in the hands of (private equity) financiers

EU’s shift to a US savings model risks dismantling its social contract
Political choices should be debated democratically, not hidden in technocratic agendas of ‘financing gaps’
The EU’s Savings and Investments Union (SIU) aims to get EU citizens to invest more of their savings on capital markets, a goal to be achieved in part by further privatizing pensions. Daniela Gabor in the FT on why the SIU is based on false assumptions:

Kulturkampf, Kanon, Karikaturenstreit – MERKUR

For whom does Trump govern?
The Big Beautiful Bill Act is a classic example of pluto-populism
Martin Wolf in the FT on the fiscal and distributive effects of Trump's tariffs and of the OBBBA. Their combined net effect on the income distribution is regressive. The rich benefit most from the tax cuts, while the tariffs will affect the poor more:

This country is slowing climate action. Its capital city is stepping up
As many federal governments slow — or reverse — climate action, Austria's capital, Vienna, wants to show how cities can take the lead.
Austria's new national government is de-prioritizing climate action, but the City of Vienna is stepping up its efforts. This reminds us of the importance of local decisions. Interesting article on NPR:

Janan Ganesh (FT) asks the interesting question why an increase in travel has not reduced nationalism. The answer, I suggest, might be social polarisation. Some people travel more (and become more open-minded), but is the rest that has turned more nationalist. The two segments barely overlap.

‘Feed the gorilla’: How corporate America fought Trump’s tariffs threat
Threat of a damaging trade war sparked a lobbying campaign by the world’s most powerful business leaders
Corporate America has been lobbying intensely behind the scenes to change Trump’s mind on tariffs in recent weeks, as this FT essay shows—much of it in private, to avoid Trump’s “bruising” counterripostes.

I wrote a piece in The NY Times about global economic stagnation and the way it is shaping politics today, less visibly perhaps than other factors, but more deeply.
