Sri Lanka: Ruinous Tax Policies Stoke Inequality Sri Lanka’s tax policies played a driving role in the country’s devastating 2022 economic crisis and have contributed to the chronic underfunding of education and other public services.

Today, @hrw.org released the 1st major report on tax, documenting how policies that favor the rich drove Sri Lanka into economic crisis & starved its public education system. UN tax treaty negotiations are historic chance to address a root cause. www.hrw.org/news/2025/10...

New US data shows 43.7 million people in poverty, with "President Trump's agenda set to further impoverish families and inflame inequality" — Oxfam In response to the U.S. Census Bureau’s release of new data on poverty and incomes in 2024, Rebecca Riddell, Oxfam America’s E

New poverty data just out affirms a shameful fact:

The US is one of the most unequal rich countries in the world.

Home to more billionaires than any other country, and 43.7 million ppl in poverty. Trump's agenda is set to make things worse.

Looking for the best states to work in? These are the top 5 states for workers!

Oxfam’s research has found these states all have the country’s strongest minimum wages, paid leave, fair schedules, and protected rights to organize. Did your state make the top 5?

The Most Hopeful Economic Story That’s Not in the News A new tax treaty is a chance for needed change.

Countries have started negotiating a new tax treaty

The US? Not in the room

Trump's unilateralism hurts ordinary people in the US and (no surprise) helps profitable corps & wealthy individuals who pay too little in tax

Seville showed that considerable challenges remain to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals. But it also paved the way for governments to build more coalitions to tax the super-rich and finance care, and put equality, democracy and sustainability at the core of their efforts. A real source of hope. As we fight US efforts to take away families' food and healthcare to give billionaires tax breaks, and tank multilateralism to pad the profits of corporations.

Today, rather than investing in workers and families, Senate Republicans passed a destructive tax bill that would leave millions hungry and without healthcare.

Lawmakers need to ask themselves: how many people are you willing to harm to pad the pockets of billionaires?

Since 1995, private wealth has surged 8x more than public wealth

Since 2015, the top 1% gained over $33.9 trillion, enough to end annual poverty 22x

Today 3.7 billion+ live in poverty. Billionaires (3000 ppl) hold equal to 14.6% of global GDP.

More millionaires in Mass. despite taxes The "Millionaire's tax" hasn't caused the wealthy to flee.

When Massachusetts residents passed a new tax on income over $1 million in 2022, critics claimed it would drive the wealthy away.

Instead, IPS scholar @ocampomar.bsky.social found that the state now has MORE millionaires — and an extra $2.46 billion raised by the tax.

Trump’s Economic Policies Show Need for a ‘Human Rights Economy’ On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced import tariffs – many above 40 percent, on goods from virtually every country – upending the global economy. Although now paused above a baseline 10 percent, except for China, these new tariffs illustrate the danger of pursuing economic reforms without regard for the impact on people’s human rights.

Yes, economies should be transformed to ensure everyone can enjoy their rights.

But the Trump approach does not care for people's lives & rights. There are other reforms we could make instead.
