Fear rules on gambling in Albanese government Andrew Wilkie has asked the PM to allow a free vote on banning gambling advertising and it appears many Labor MPs would support it.

We've had enough of the big supermarkets ripping us off. Aussies want affordable housing, not another Woolies scam. When state & fed governments give profit-hungry developers new avenues for profit in a housing crisis you have to wonder who they’re really working for.

How ludicrous for Labor to cut $5 billion in public services during a cost of living crisis. Every six months the government pays around $5b in Fuel Tax Credits to mining corporations to burn fossil fuels. If Labor is going to cut spending, cut handouts to fossil fuel barons.

So, is this tge right time to remind Tasmanians that the AI centres courted by Launceston council require continuous, enormous water resources?

Yes. Yes it is...

While unionized Starbucks workers are on strike for a fair contract, don’t cross the picket line!

Show solidarity β€” like Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders.

Listen to what they had to say.

Do you see any reason why your flag, as a symbol of this unceded continent, should not be the banner to represents it? My feeling, respectfully, is that it would be unequivocal acknowledgment of your continuing sovereignty over the land.

My preference too for the Indigenous flag. It has a simplicity and purity that goes beyond other too self-conscious "designs" I've seen. Less is more. As for green and yellow (gold is a metal); in the psychology of colour these are the colours most associated with envy and cowardice. Really?

Tasmania gets a billion dollar sport stadium instead of world class education and health care

Clearly the people making decisions have that already

Cutbacks, revenue raising in line to help fund Hobart AFL stadium Tasmania's premier and treasurer agree to reduce borrowings for government businesses in an effort to accommodate more debt for the Hobart AFL stadium.

Tasmania is about to enter a period of fiscal austerity it hasn't experienced before. Hospitality businesses near the stadium are expecting some sort of economic nirvana. They better hope mainlanders are cashed up. Tasmanians using the stadium will be lucky to afford a packet of chips. #politas

I must confess to an intense dislike of gambling fuelled, professional, spectator sport. But if the majority feel they really must have a team so be it; but it should not be at the cost of destroying the heart of a city I love. Let them build their arena for bread and circuses elsewhere.

Not just gullible; but mindless proselytisers for an impending financial disaster. To try and convince them otherwise is like arguing with children. I have a friend of 30 years, militantly, gloatingly pro-stadium, who I will most likely never speak to again. As you say; sad.

We already pay as much rent as mainlanders, food is more expensive and wages are lower. Going to big events isn’t possible for most. We’re becoming one of those tourism destinations where the locals can’t afford to do anything. The stadium will massively accelerate that process.

Taxpayers treated like mugs for a Big Sport stadium stitch-up β€” while Tasmanians don't matter at all

Tasmanian politicians are going to blow $1.1 billion on a stadium that will return less than half that in benefits, in a state with urgent health and education needs. It’s testament to bogans

I call on the Australian government to #RaiseTheRate of all support payments to a living wage.
This would be the single most effective way to lift the productivity, quality of life, and well-being of the whole country.

It's not hyperbole to say there will be lives lost because of this decision. Tassie can ill afford this money to be directed away from essential services such as health. Too many times, essential services are cut to pander to vanity projects with pie in the sky promises of financial gains. #politas
