Four million salmon died prematurely at Tasmanian fish farms in 2025, government data reveals Death toll sparks calls for companies to be fined under animal welfare legislation over mass fish deaths

Almost all salmon in Australia is from Tasmania, and the industry there is essentially unregulated - and dangerously unhealthy.

Thereโ€™s a meta version of โ€œstories of powerlessness that are apparently too difficult or niche for a national audienceโ€. Itโ€™s called Tasmania. Iโ€™ve lost count of the number of stories Iโ€™ve encountered in the island state that should have scandalised the nation, but have been met with a shrug by the mainland media.

For example, did you know that the Tasmanian government recently paid $75 million in a class action settlement to 129 victims of child sexual abuse at the hands of dozens of government employees in its only youth detention centre? Probably not. Amid the lack of national attention, the Ashley Youth Detention Centre is still open, and this year almost 50% of its detainees reported theyโ€™d been victims of abuse. There is now a second class action in train for the many further Ashley victims who missed the first one. The impoverished state has estimated its total liability for child sexual abuse claims at over $600 million. Six. Hundred. Million. Dollars.

You cannot tell me that this didnโ€™t deserve national attention, or that they wouldnโ€™t have been leading national bulletins for weeks if they broke in Melbourne or Sydney.

Did you know that Tasmania has a functional adult literacy rate of 50%?

Iโ€™ve written about these and so many other scandals. Local Tasmanian reporters have also written about the horrific environmental impact of the salmon industry; about the clusterfuck of the biggest infrastructure project in the stateโ€™s history, the new Spirit of Tasmania vessels; about the dire state of the health system; about the cost of housing and the madness of building an unaffordable AFL stadium, and the ballooning government debt. In terms of ongoing national coverage, though, all of these stories have been outweighed by the annual nude swim that happens in Hobartโ€™s River Derwent during Dark Mofo.
