Notes from the field entitled "Writing Brave Women: An Exercise in Academic Publishing as Feminist Solidarity" by Julia Zulver & Kiran Stallone. Introduction beings: "What does it mean to be a brave woman? In 2020, we saw Belarusian women take to the streets dressed in white to oppose the violent dictatorship that had been in power for twenty-six years. In 2021, our television screens showed the Fall of Kabul, and the takeover by Taliban fighters, who overnight began to reverse decades of women’s empowerment. In response, and despite the risks, women demonstrators took to the streets in Kabul to demand their rights to work, education, and political participation. And in late 2022, we saw Iranian women fight for freedom, cutting their hair and burning their headscarves as they called for women’s rights in the context of brutal repression. "

Fifty Years of Human Rights in Chile This book examines the struggle for human rights in Chile since 1973 and celebrates the academic work and activism of Latin Americanist Alan Angell. It analyses Chileans’ collective memory of the Pinochet regime and the role of contemporary opponents of the advancement of human rights. Its focus on a single country allows for a more detailed exploration of memory and human rights than those in comparable treatments of these topics in the Southern Cone. The book brings together contributors connected to Angell, Oxford University's Latin American Centre and the UK more broadly through their studies, research and personal histories. They include two former ministers in the Boric government, one of whom is a former president of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Through its unique structure, timing and thematic approach, the book provides valuable insights to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as lecturers and researchers.
