He finished with a polished, band-version of Chimes of Freedom, which completely lost the meaning and feeling of Dylan’s original - a song of the broken and marginalised, which in the context of the evening, sounded like it had been repurposed for the glory of a lost America.

In talking about the abuses going on in the US, he never mentioned the horrors of Gaza. Given the band’s strong anti-Apartheid stance in the past, it’s hard not to feel disappointed.

I always thought Springsteen’s songwriting displayed a healthy scepticism, if not rejection, of these types of narratives. Rolling them out now, when the US is complicit in genocide in Gaza, seemed especially outrageous.

Springsteen deserves a lot of credit for speaking out against Trump and the slide towards authoritarianism in the US. However, he wheeled out a lot of American Exceptionalism tropes to support his argument - “a beacon of liberty to the world”, etc.

Saw Springsteen at Liverpool at the weekend. Music was great, topped off by the appearance of Paul McCartney for the encore. The politics of the evening left me angry, though.
