Someone had an “oopsies” with their sailboat right in front of one our study sites on Catalina Island. Apparently the boat has been stuck there for a couple of months.

40th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy. I recall seeing this in 7th grade. This was a diverse shuttle crew with Christa McAullife, Ronald McNair & Ellison Onizuka. There’s a scholarship named after McNair & tributes to Onizuka in Little Tokyo, L.A. as the first Japanese American in space.

thinking I wish the broader geoscience community had this same energy when NCAR shuttered their DEI office. Looking ahead the STEM community is going to need to reflect on why they organized against the federal govt here but not when the NCAR DEI office was shuttered and BIPOC communities….

what are we supposed to do, it’s the federal government when asking about different research entities shuttering their DEI programs. Yet people in the geoscience community were able to organize an effort against the federal government the day after the NCAR news was announced at AGU. I remember….

Another year done. I saw my hometown Dodgers repeat as champions & saw people in my hometown push back against forces trying to disrupt what makes my hometown great. I traveled & found ways to keep STEM programs for underrepresented people running. Looking forward to the new year & better days.

This story likely got overlooked over the holiday rush. I’m an MSI grad and these programs provided support that helped me get where I’m at today. MSIs are already underfunded & overlooked, this decision will likely exacerbate these issues.
