"Those who would defend the BBC need to recognise the bad faith of those attacking it β and that the era of the rulebook is over."
13.11.2025 18:59 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0As a retired Editor of news programming this should imho have been dealt with at an editorial level. It probably was. What led to top level resignations was the determination of Tory βagentβ Gibb, Farage and Johnson to go public and bring in Trump to force a change of leadership in time for 2029
12.11.2025 17:42 β π 6 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Further to this, it is disappointing that most of the news coverage of the $1bn threat letter did not critically engage with its content.
Instead, most coverage accepted the content of the letter at face value.

A proposal for a reply to his $1bn claim

Please cut up the plastic rings. They are always caught on animals causing severe injury and death. Only takes 15 seconds to cut up all the holes.

A great day for the golden rule of political analysis: when the right wins it is a resounding ideological victory that humiliates the left and when the left wins it is a precarious fluke that will surely end up humiliating the left. Conservatives are powerβs landlords and the left merely tenants

02.11.2025 14:53 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Just took a deep breath & went to look at X. It's an absolute cesspit of hatred & glee: one huge account after another blaming the Huntingdon attacks on immigration, with total disregard for information, evidence or the safety of those at whom they're pointing. The yearning for violence is palpable.

Nobody with any sense or decency should be there.
No organisations, government departments, or politicians should be there.
Everyone who is, is enabling this monster.

The US & UK constitutional traditions both assume that the best way to constrain a tyrant is to ensure parliamentary control over "the power of the purse".
If a president can pay troops via a private donor, & impose taxes at his personal whim, a key pillar of Anglo-American constitutionalism falls.

The UKβs independent scientific bodies are highly vulnerable to politicisation - over the past 5 months I've been working with @martinmckee.bsky.social to map out their vulnerabilities and it's not good news.

I spent some time with OpenAI's new AI video app Sora. Not just slop but ragebait, fake crimes and women splattered with white goo. The implications of all of this are horrifying.

If ever there was a time not to normalize Trumpβs authoritarian fever dreams, this is it.
This should be impeachable. βWar ravagedβ Portland? Heβs insane - & insanely power hungry. The script is set - call an imaginary group a terror group and then send in the troops.
Nathan Gill is no fringe politician.
He was the leader of the Reform Party and before that UKIP in Wales.
A Brexit Party MEP.
A friend and ally of Nigel Farage, who in 2016 called him:
"terrific," and "as honest as the day is long."
This is a MASSIVE story

So much has gone wrong in US press reporting on Trump because the White House reporters are people who have exclusively covered US politics.
They need people who have worked in Hungary, Turkey, etc. The relevant knowledge isn't Reagan factoids; it's the dynamics of competitive authoritarianism.
