He was appalled by the examination system, when it was explained to him, he could not imagine a greater deterrent to the natural wish to learn than this pattern of cramming in information and disgorging it on demand.

Given all the "Shark expert reacts to Deep Blue Sea" vids on YT, "Dove expert reacts to Prince" must surely exist.

Do you see how an act is not, as young men think, like a rock that one picks up and throws, and it hits or misses, and that's the end of it. When that rock is lifted, the earth is lighter; the hand that bears it heavier.

Not at all, and I was surprised myself when I put it on. I was so sure that I'd seen it. And yes to full body high. Everything in the movie coheres, and flows just right. It's been days now and it's still resonating in me.

Worrye not about 'being productive,' for thou art not a product. Thou art a star daunsinge yn a hopeful skye. A signal blinking across centuryes and worldes. Thou art a song performid just once and perfectlye.

Perhaps the recording artist and song I least expected in this context. πŸ˜„

Until he turns back, pushes against the flow to go towards the present, the future. To be active not passive, having severed his ties (literally) with the past/the memories that held him. And goes to the person who has always loved him as the crowds dance around them and the world *doesn't* end.

NGL, I think that final scene is one of the all time great screen kisses as well. Lenny's whole arc was from a guy who was stuck in the past, drifting and going with the flow to someone who has to act. He finally does and saves himself. Then gets lead away by authorities, lost in the crowd...

"One man's mundane and desperate existence is another man's technicolor."

"Memories were meant to fade, Lenny. They're designed that way for a reason."

Also, one of my favourite moments/line readings ever from Basset: "Safety's on..."

As much as I like Heat, I think Thief is the better film. As debut features go I rank it up there with Hill's Hard Times. Both turn pulp into poetry. And neither one of them puts a foot wrong.

Some of the exterior night scenes made me think of The Driver as well, tho Hill's movie is a little more stylised in terms of narrative and character. Still the colour of night, streetlights and neon on wet tarmac etc felt like Thief and The Driver could exist in the same world almost.

But in the diner scene with Weld and the adoption agency scene as well, as he gets frustrated and loses his temper. Even as he gets outwardly angry, his eyes are full of pain.

I'm not sure how I convinced myself I'd seen it - but once it started it was clear I hadn't. Equally I was utterly hooked. Kind of obsessed with Caan's acting in it, and his eyes especially. It's like he's on the verge of tears/is holding them back, not only in the prison scene with Willie Nelson,

I *thought* I had seen it years ago, but when I put it on it was entirely new to me. It knocked me sideways. And yes, absolutely, between this and De Niro in Heat, you have to think that Mann was a Parker fan.

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched I suspect The Outfit would gain a half star if I hadn't been coming on the heels of Thief which I thought was stunning.

There are literally thousands of NSFW artists, writers and otherwise creators whose livelihoods are currently threatened by the idiotic, ill-conceived and ludicrously implemented "Online Safety Act" as recently introduced in UK law.
