Fun fact: I visited Japan around the time this movie came out so I saw commercials for it everywhere.
This is another movie to watch for the pure, wholesome vibes and I adore how the animation was made to look and evoke the feeling of a childrenβs storybook.
Howlβs Moving Castle (2004)
I like the magical feel of the world and the romance between Sophie and Howl is cute. The anti-war theme feels a bit shoehorned in, but given this came out shortly after the US invaded Iraq, I canβt really blame Miyazaki too much for wanting to make a statement.
Spirited Away (2001)
THIS was the movie that got me into Studio Ghibli as it came out around the time I really started getting into anime. I absolutely love how vibrant and detailed everything in this movie is and how expansive the world feels despite taking place primarily at the bathhouse.

Give him a follow for more excellent art - I think his work here speaks for itself!!
Princess Mononoke (1997)
Definitely one of Ghibliβs and Miyazakiβs best films. It takes what it did with NausicaΓ€ and made the setting more Japanese and the tone WAY darker. What I love most is that Laby Eboshi being morally grey makes the man vs nature theme way more nuanced than in most fiction.
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
I adored the whimsical slice of life feel of this movie and, as someone whoβs loved reading since I was a kid and as someone who really wants to get back into writing, I REALLY resonated with Shizuku.
Porco Rosso (1992)
Gotta love Miyazaki using his skills in animation and love of planes to say βfuck fascism!β
I might need a rewatch for the themes to really sink in for me, but it was a good look at the consequences of war without completely bogging down the mood.
Only Yesterday (1991)
The pacingβs a bit slow for my taste but I completely get why itβs like that. Itβs a nice reflection on both the good and bad parts of your childhood and how those moments affect your present and future.
Kikiβs Delivery Service (1989)
I remember seeing a commercial for this movie on VHS when I was little and it ended up becoming my first Ghibli film. Itβs a cute blend of fantasy and slice of life and I find its message incredibly important for people struggling with depression or burnout.
My Neighbour Totoro (1988)
The ultimate βcomfy vibesβ movie. You guys shouldβve seen the βcute overloadβ moment Alex had when Totoro first appeared on screen π
Castle in the Sky (1986)
This is a classic Ghibli fantasy adventure movie. I love when stories incorporate floating cities and lost technology and the sky pirates are a lot of fun!
Happy Thanksgiving! π§‘π

Have I ever mentioned how much I love libraries? And that we should be funding them way more, especially in areas of low income, because they are literally a proven benefit to every person

Alex and I felt like doing a Studio Ghibli marathon and I was excited to watch this since Iβd never seen NausicaΓ€ before. Plot wasnβt the most put-together for me but I love how it laid the groundwork for a lot of Ghibliβs movies and other Japanese media.

Iβve heard a lot of good things about this show and Iβve taken to binging it whenever Iβm travelling.
I just started Season 6 and I love how much of a βcomfort showβ vibe it has. The characters are all weird and quirky in a way that doesnβt feel βtoo muchβ, IMO.
Screen for traffickers and abusers, sure. Heck, screen for scammers, too.
But so many people who've served sentences for minor things like theft and possession can't get jobs. The black mark just disqualifies them of the bat. SW is often the only viable option.
Take that away, where do they go?
That's actually an excellent lesson.

Yeah, you could argue that this movie might have a few too many βJames Gunn-ismsβ, but between this and My Adventures with Superman, I absolutely missed this vibe with Superman and I never want it to leave!
Its anime adaptation is coming out soon, so thatβs definitely going to help attract more fans!

I havenβt quite done a full run of this game yet, but technical issues aside, Iβve really enjoyed how tongue-in-cheek it is with the concept of taking inanimate objects and making a dating sim out of them featuring a lot of notable voice actors!
KPop Demon Hunters (2025)
Yeah, I totally get the hype around K-pop music now.
I really hope we get more out of this world and these characters to flesh out what the writers probably werenβt able to due to the limited run time.
