That's not the substance of the complaint, this is just a bit taken from it. It's a libel suit for saying Taibbi took money for coverage that Higgins asserts in the book and interviews. The complaint in toto is quite short.

I loathe Taibbi but isn't this a fairly straightforward complaint? I know nothing about what evidence Higgins may or may not have but I don't understand why this complaint seems anything other than basic libel. Is Taibbi known to have taken money from someone else I'm not aware of?

Reading the complaint (IANAL) on the face of it it doesn't seem unreasonable. Taibbi is putatively defending his journalistic reputation after Higgins published allegations about Taibbi taking money from Musk for unknown services rendered wo citing anything specific.

So this lawsuit states that Taibbi was used by Musk with no benefit to himself, unlike Weiss who sold out to "actual" billionaires. I...guess?
