superman’s such a kindhearted earnest dork he’s fundamentally incapable of understanding what “punk” is, because there’s not a single cynical bone in his body. that’s like the whole point of the bit lol, lois lane spells it out for us pretty explicitly

for this specific character and story, framing the surrounding world with “realistic cynicism” would make far less of an impact vs framing it as a dream of who we once saw ourselves as, which has now been lost

I do think part of the nuance of Superman stories is this exact bittersweet accountability framing. Superman is a story about light and hope, kindness and ideals, and it *should* break your heart a bit to see Metropolis as “what we could’ve had” (as opposed to Gotham City, which is a darker mirror)

the man understood the assignment. the characterizations were perfect. my biggest complaint was “damn I really wanted to see Superman personally punch a tank after that kid waved the flag” which doesn’t even really count as a complaint. i’m gonna see it again in 3D
