Jabari Brisport released the following statement in response to President Trump’s June 21st attack on Iran: BROOKLYN, NY – “President Trump’s criminal attack on Iran was a monumental threat to the well-being of Americans, Iranians, and people all over the world. Many New Yorkers and their loved ones in Iran are already directly in danger as a result, and any further escalation by our government will only put more lives at risk. The path to this globally destabilizing act was paved by the same political establishment that was never held accountable for its criminal invasion of Iraq — including many of our Democratic leaders. They have continued beating the drums of war to serve their own political purposes and the interests of their campaign donors. Every elected official who has their constituents' interests at heart must stand unequivocally against President Trump’s war on Iran and the destruction of lives in pursuit of global domination.”

The state budget was due April 1st, but Governor Hochul is refusing to work on finalizing our state funding because the legislature is pushing back against this ban. Please take a quick moment to call her (and ask a friend to do so as well.) We’ve got to speak up right now.

Governor Hochul is planning to force this into our state budget, so she can tie it to funding that our communities desperately need. Unlike at the federal level – where congress wields the most power over the budget – at the state level NY's Governor has far out-sized power to set our budget.

The Governor says she’s considering a “medical exemption” to the mask ban, but she knows there is no functional way to implement that. A cop won’t know that you’re feeling sick, and by the time you’ve got a test to prove it, you've potentially been spreading a disease for *days*.

New York might become the next state to pass legislation making us more vulnerable to contagious diseases. It’s in the works right now, so this is the moment to speak up.

Jabari Brisport, Chair of the Committee on Children & Families and former public-school teacher, released the following statement in response to President Trump’s mass layoffs at Head Start – one of America’s most important child care programs: “Perhaps no president in American history has demonstrated this much open contempt for working-class people. If you want to trap a child in generational poverty, dismantling the Head Start program is possibly the single most effective way to accomplish that. It is a program specifically designed to ensure children from low-income families don’t enter school already years behind their classmates. As a former public-school teacher, I’ve seen how hard it is for children to ever catch up when they have to come from behind. This move will also ensure that countless working-class families, who have been fighting to get back on their feet after the pandemic, will suddenly have their legs kicked out from under them. With these programs closing – while we already have so little child care availability – many parents will be unable to find new child care quickly enough to keep their jobs. President Trump is attacking the 60-year-old Head Start program because as much as he hates poor people – he loves poverty”

NY also has to increase funding for child care vouchers, particularly in NYC. Mayor Adams’ administration unfortunately didn’t come forward about the city’s need for additional CCAP funding during budget hearings, but the state has to adjust now or it will be families who suffer. (3/4)

We don’t have enough child care workers because they earn less than 96% of all professions in NYS. Parents who are eligible for child care assistance often can’t actually find an available provider. We need the Child Care Workforce Fund to recruit & retain child care workers. (2/4)

America’s national education system has been chipped away at for decades by those like President Trump, who despise its power as an equalizer between the wealthy and the working class. I became a public-school teacher because I understood the vital importance of universal education. I became a State Senator because I saw my students’ education coming under constant threat. The far-right wants a private education system that they can profit from, and they want the working-class stripped of the power that comes from education. Like our founding fathers, President Trump knows that our best defense against tyranny is public education; that is precisely why he wants to end it. It is also precisely why Americans will fight back.”
