not that i don't want to play ff8 but seeing it as one of the options is kinda spooky cause that's a big commitment

today was scary as the next game picked was almost ff8 but instead we're playing legacy of kain soul reaver and it's pretty cool so far

it's a good game held back by some poor design choices, but overall a fairly enjoyable experience. i'm not someone who's hugely into SRPGs so maybe a connoisseur would enjoy it more, but for me it's just kind of unremarkable and okay. onto the next one

as i understand it, arc the lad 1+2 were actually developed as one game at first, but had to be split up into two due to time constraints. this means that ATL1 is mostly setting up for the sequel, which is much better received, but all in all i have next to no interest in playing it after this

the story is very simple but the dialog is a bit nonsensical at times. stuff just kinda Happens, and dialogue is long-winded. i imagine there's plenty of things lost in translation so i'm not gonna harp on it too much, but i never really felt invested or interested in the story or characters

i include in this the 50 floor dungeon i went into to see if i could use it to level up, and that worked great. however, after you clear the 50 floors and beat the optional boss at the end (which took a couple hours), you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK WITH EVERY ENEMY RESPAWNED!! funny but EVIL

because battles take ages to get through and characters really don't get levels all that quickly, grinding in this game takes FOREVER. there is a belt you can get that speeds things up, but it's *very* easily missable. i'd say about 6 hours of my playthrough were devoted to slow grinding

early on, battles are okay, but combat often feels grueling to get through. ability animations take forever to resolve and combat is quite slow-paced. i didn't take too much issue, until progressing normally through the game left most of my party underleveled, and i had to grind. oh god, the grind

one of the major complaints for the game in online spaces is that it's too short, and indeed, i completed it in around 17 hours which is on the shorter end for JRPGs. however, it didn't feel "too short" at all - it almost felt too long! this is mostly down to the pacing

the graphical style is nice and holds up well. the pixel art is great! the cgi cutscenes really show their age, but are still pretty charming. gameplay is a classic turn-based grid-style affair and works well, if maybe a bit simple for today's standards

GAME 3/100: Arc the Lad
jp cover, but i played the 2002 english translation that was part of the arc the lad collection. arc the lad is a 1995 SRPG and was actually the 2nd rpg to release on the playstation (the first was king's field, jp only). it's alright!
