16.07.2025 10:50 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0St Swithun Dreams of Rain Though famously housed in a shrine in Winchester Cathedral, St Swithun left instructions for his body to be buried outside the church, โubi et pedibus praetereuntium et stillicidiis ex alto rorantibus esset obnoxiusโ trans: โwhere it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and to the raindrops pouring from on highโ I desired a humble ending: entrusted to the earth, with the sky as a canopy, and drops of rain to wash away my pride. My successors thought otherwise. A Saint requires a marble tomb, central shrine, gold in abundance, they thought. No rain reaches me here. No water from above. When the floods tried to drown the foundations, I prayed they would let them, that the waters would scatter my bones amidst the collapse, that the cathedral would wash away in a swell of rain and I, fragmented as I am, would rest again as I wished, beneath vast and sodden skies.
It's St Swithun's Day, have a poem where he's grumpy about the way he was buried, and was actually really happy when Winchester Cathedral started to sink because it was built without foundations.

A copy of Kingdom Buildings: Your Church and Churchyard as Assets for Mission, by Kenneth Padley
What if, and hear me out here, you saw your church building as a gift rather than a massive inconvenience?
Here Padley explores how small, practical changes to our church buildings and grounds can unlock their potential as assets for mission.

A display island in a bookshop with books propped up four sides around a cube. You can see '100 Ways To Get Your Church Noticed' and 'The Exiled Church' from Canterbury Press, and New Churches: A Theology' from SCM Press, among others. In the background there are tall bookcases lining the walls, and an open glass door with a chair in the distance.
A bookshop photographed from above - a white man stands looking at a display island of books and there are bookshelves lining the walls, spinning card racks near the open glass doors, another book island on the left and at the back on the left, a white countertop with rows of icons behind it on shelves. It looks light and airy.
Delighted to see our pals at Church House Bookshop (not yet on Bluesky but we're working on it) are set up and once again open in Westminster after its move back round the corner! I spy an SCM Press book and some from @canterburypress.bsky.social...

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Luke 2.26 If you won't see Death before you see the Messiah Keep Your Eyes Shut. Don't enter the temple to God's call, you've gained immortality after all - why listen to the songs they're singing? Why hasten towards your ending? Don't hold death in your arms and proclaim it Life. But you're stood in the temple already, praising this child you've seen. Oh Simeon - God-receiver - enraptured in an instant, answer this one question, please: What does it mean to hold God in your arms and know that you're dying? My friend, you misunderstand - as I held The Christ to my chest I saw Death fleeing away.
"What does it mean to hold God in your arms
and know that you're dying?"

I want to tell them how wrong the hagiographies have me - to call up the Vatican and list every woman I loved. I want to tell them how, one night, we went out into the desert; how mouth touched skin in the cooling air, and we cried, Oh, God! like saints at prayer.
