Perhaps this government expects all recent Harvard graduates to go work on farms or meat factories, replacing arrested migrant workers and being re-educated. This would make President Trump and Mao Tse-Tung strange bedfellows.

At least it's not steel cages 🙄.

The Trump government knows no bounds to its cruelty.

"It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material."

Is there a more understated way to announce a world-shattering discovery than Watson & Crick's 1953 announcement of the structure of DNA?

Our bodies begin to fail as we get older, and we are seen as less virile or sexy, if men or women. But we survive the sorrows of our lives and develop a beauty in the dignity of our bearing. You saw and heard it in Simon's show. You can hear it as well here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AHC...

This is why I see disruption of international trade as most likely to achieve the necessary pressure. I think the idea has not been examined adequately and embraced as part of a strategy to fight climate change.

That would be my wish too, but I don't see a popular response strong enough to affect government policy in every country where it matters. How do you see this working in China, India or the USA?

Much of the American election was premised on eradicating the "Deep State", a notion of government conspiracy and subterfuge. That kind of skepticism is now brought in full bloom, whereby established science is cast away and quackery is promoted.

Looks like Science was the Deep State.

World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990 World Athletics says its genetic test for women ensures ‘the integrity of women’s sport’ – but science does not support this overly simplistic idea.

World Athletics says that "The SRY gene is a reliable proxy for determining biological sex." The guy who literally discovered the gene and has spent the last 35 years researching it says they're wrong. theconversation.com/world-athlet...

P.S. I am open to counter-arguments. So far, I've not heard any persuasive argument to the contrary.

I have no idea what specific event will disrupt global trade, but I can see hints. Whatever it is, it'll catch us by surprise, just like the failure or Lehman Brothers and Bears Stearns caught the financial world by surprise. However, the global response to these failures was large, global and swift

The only point in common between adversaries who must cooperate on climate - China, Europe, India and the USA - is international trade. Collectively, they represent 75% of the global economy and its emissions.

As things deteriorate, what is the concern that will trigger their response? Global trade

I'll answer the question differently: what will make governments act decisively on climate?

It certainly isn't a concern for human suffering, at home or abroad. It isn't damage to agriculture, or increasing cost of housing due to flooding or fire impacts.

What does this leave?

These are examples of climate-induced disruption of trade. As our climate worsens and we experience stronger climate extremes, there will be greater, more impactful disruptions. Since governments' greatest concern is the economy, they will let climate-impacts increase until the economy deteriorates.

1. Shipment of goods through the Port of Vancouver was halted in 2021 due to an atmospheric river. It'll happen again, and worse.
2. Shipping was impaired in 2022/2023 by drought-induced restrictions in the Panama Canal
3. Traffic on navigable waters in Europe was restricted due to low water levels.

Unless climate change triggers a steadily increasing deterioration of global trade. At the limit, this deterioration will cause a global, climate-induced recession. It's a terrible outcome, but it is one which governments cannot ignore.

I recall this issue being salient and much discussed in the 1970's, and I was under the impression that progress had been made - there are now more women physicians and I thought that medicine was now taught differently.

It's dispiriting to hear that little has changed.

04.08.2025 00:32 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

My apologies. I've had physicians who were sensitive and others who were not. It isn't about me: it is about physicians.

And I understand that it is a far more consistent experience for women, for the reasons you explain.

I have nothing further to add.

No, no: he just went in and shoved a tube down my throat!

Anyway, I'm not out to diminish your experience or that of other women. It just feels like it's hit-and-miss with physicians, with the extra burden of condescension shown to women by male physicians.

Some physicians are just indifferent or careless about our pain. I once had a device shoved up my nose and into my throat to check for something. I panicked in discomfort and fear, while the doctor jovially asked me to note my vocal cords on the screen, and isn't it cool! I said Gahrrrrrlgaaaahlllll
