In Friz Freleng’s FRESH HARE (’42), Mountie Elmer Fudd chases Bugs through the snowy Canadian North Woods. It was early enough in Bugs’ career that he was portrayed as a wanted criminal on the lam.

In THE DRAFT HORSE (’42) marked a turning point in Chuck Jones’ directorial career, where leisurely sentimental cartoons were cast aside in favor of pure, fast-paced comedy when a plough horse tries to enlist in the US Army.

In Tex Avery’s OF FOX AND HOUNDS (’40), Willoughby the dog (voiced by Avery himself) tries to catch a wily fox, to no avail. Thus began Tex’s fixation with Lon Chaney Jr.’s portrayal of Lennie in the 1939 film adaptation of John Steinbeck’s OF MICE AND MEN.

Chuck Jones’s SNIFFLES AND THE BOOKWORM (’39) was another in a series of “books come to life” pictures the studio produced, with the tune “Mutiny in the Nursery” as a musical centerpiece.

Tex Avery’s DANGEROUS DAN McFOO (’39), his comic rendition of Robert W. Service’s “The Shooting of Dan McGrew,” was the first to have voices from Robert C. Bruce and Arthur Q. Bryan, who both became prominent voices for Warner cartoons.
I had Camille as a teacher for two classes. We would chit-chat about classic films together after class, but my tune’s definitely changed on her since then. (She was also SO high-energy during lectures, it was like she had drunk a tumbler full of Espresso, and spoke in fast forward.)

In Bob Clampett’s POLAR PALS (’39), Porky acts as a protector of the North Pole wildlife from Arctic hunter, I. Killem. The musical centerpiece, “Let’s Rub Noses Like the Eskimoses,” originated from a 1935 stage production at Radio City Music Hall.

In Frank Tashlin’s CRACKED ICE (’38), W. C. Squeals—a pig version of comedian W. C. Fields, voiced by Tedd Pierce—attempts to get some of the liquor from a St. Bernard’s neck-mounted barrel.

In Tex Avery’s I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU ('37), iceman Sammy Sparrow is spurned by Katie Canary, who only cares for radio crooners. Sammy then hires a mockingbird to croon so he can mime it and impress Katie for keeps.

Well, it’s finally here: all 114 Tom and Jerry cartoons from Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera at MGM, all in one collection at long last. This is worth purchasing: T&J fans, animation enthusiasts, and even those who currently teach animation courses can benefit from this.

In Friz Freleng’s APES OF WRATH (’59), a reworking of Bob McKimson’s GORILLA MY DREAMS, a drunken stork is missing a baby ape from his bundle, so he knocks out Bugs, and delivers him to Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Ape.

In Bob McKimson’s RABBIT ROMEO (’57), Elmer looks after the large, lovesick Slobovian rabbit Millicent (June Foray) and brings over Bugs to satiate her craving for male companionship. RABBIT ROMEO was one of the few stories Mike Maltese supplied for McKimson.

In HOLIDAY FOR DRUMSTICKS (’49), Art Davis’s penultimate cartoon as a regular director, the duck persuades a turkey on a diet to avoid becoming Thanksgiving dinner, and for Daffy to be well-fed.
This payoff in this scene turned out much better in the final airing with Jimbo’s line: “All right, Simpson, you win this round…”
