I would nuance your argument. Many, including queers, have held the right passports and suffered exclusions around the world, and many scholars 2day face excessive burdens in entering the EU, UK, Canada, US, South Africa, and countries around the world because of politically motivated sanctions.

2 realities: a gilded oval office; millions of USers marching under #NOKINGS banners. Extremists deploying a queer peril; the power of queer activists in encampments, in the street, in elected office in cities like Columbus, defending justice & human rights.

Knowledge does not bow down to tyrants.

As I wrote in the newsletter, I respect and admire members who are taking a stand and will not come to #ISA2026. I also understand members who need in-person engagement with colleagues and mentors around the world to advance their work. Knowledge cannot bow down to tyrants.

Alison Johnston and I have a new open access article out arguing that pressure from domestic rather than foreign bondholders is most effective in forcing populist governments to rein in their economic policies. Our case studies are Italy and Hungary, but there are clear lessons for the USA.
