The words "Advanced Care Planning" over a blurred photo of a street at night.

Advance care planning doesn’t look the same for everyone. Social and structural inequities—like poverty, racism, housing insecurity, or limited access to health care—can profoundly shape how people approach care planning.

What next? Relationship-centred approaches for healthcare system redesign to meet the palliative care needs of people living with severe mental illness

May 8, 12pm PST

Meeting link: https://uvic.zoom.us/j/97481351651

This talk draws on an ethnographic study conducted in London, UK, examining the role of relationships in palliative and mental healthcare across hospital and community settings. Using qualitative participatory sociocultural methods, the study involved154 participants. We co-developed the relationship-centred concepts of "collective social safety," "relational reach," and "relational glue" to highlight essential elements for effective, needs-based care. These ideas will be related to the objectives of Sarah’s Churchill Fellowship with the audience invited to share their insights of transforming policies, systems, and evaluations to better meet the palliative care needs of people living with severe mental illness.

Sarah Yardley, Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine, University College London, UK Sarah researches relationship-centred practices in healthcare systems to reduce rhetoric vs. reality, policy vs. practice, expectations vs. experiences gaps. Her Churchill Fellowship seeks to improve care for people living with Serious Mental Illness (SMI) who need Palliative Care for advanced incurable physical illness.
