Second episode of my podcast about the end of the war in 1945 - the Cox siblings were horrified about the atomic bombs and wondered what sort of world their new great nieces were going to experience (my aunt Judy was one of those new babies, born in summer of 1945)

The 80th anniversary of VE Day was in May, the anniversary of VJ day is tomorrow.
The Machell Cox siblings, my family, wrote in detail about the end of the war in 1945 - plus what they thought about the General Election.

Yes, my great great grandad Rev Dr Cox was a grump, many opinionated letters to the papers. Discovered he wrote for the Church times as The Perambulating Pedagogue.

One of the family lived in South Africa, knew places Winston mentioned, thought some aspects highly unlikely. Allegedly, Winston knew how to embroider to make a story more exciting and sellable

Inside the Salt Path controversy: β€˜Scandal has stalked memoir since the genre was invented’ Raynor Winn’s bestselling book is far from the first time a true story has been called into question after publication. But how does it happen? And should readers really feel betrayed?

Is a memoir true or not? Nothing new in this - my family letters allege Winston Churchill made up chunks of his book 'London to Ladysmith' published 1900.

Their mother said in 1906, no one writes letters properly any more, like when I was young 🀣 She said you should all write letters so you stay in touch, so ten siblings stayed in touch because they wrote letters to each other. Handwritten letters are awesome!

Siblings sad, they couldn't post the Budget to Dardanelles and Ber's ship. Many letters of his missing. Some locations described but not named (his ship was at Thasos), some letters get past the censors. Some of Ber's letters described by Vera. Much fascinating WW1 info that I need to write about
