The wave of generative AI CEOs complaining people don't use their products is kind of disgusting. You pushed something the marketplace is rejecting and now you whine about it. What kind of capitalist are you? Oh, that's right, the deeply parasitical yet incompetent at convincing the host kind.

What's the point of vibe coding if I still have to pay a dev to fix it?
what's the point of vibe coding if at the end of the day i still gotta pay a dev to look at the code anyway. sure it feels kinda cool while i'm typing, like i'm in some flow state or whatever, but when stuff breaks it's just dead weight. i cant vibe my way through debugging, i cant ship anything that actually matters, and then i'm back to square one pulling out my wallet for someone who actually knows what they're doing. makes me think vibe coding is just roleplay for guys who want to feel like hackers without doing the hard part, am i missing something here or is it really just useless once you step outside the fantasy

Resisting the Hivemind: Pluribus, Generative AI, and Empire - Reactor While its creator tell us that Pluribus is not about advent of generative AI, it's difficult not to spot the many places where the fledgling tech and extraterrestrial hivemind overlap.

I found the ep in PLURIBUS where Carol--white, American--meets 5 non-white, non-American survivors of the hivemind off-putting, but in a way that made me curious to see where Gilligan was going. Now that I have, I wrote about how empire, privilege, genAI, & resistance converge in the show's subtext:

In 2026: Generative AI is not inevitable. You can say no. You can refuse. You can reject the disgusting lukewarm slop that the richest and worst people in the world are trying to force-feed you. You can tell them to eat shit and die mad. You can break the machine

My daughter, who's had a degree in computer science for 25 years, posted this about ChatGPT on Facebook. It's the best description I've seen.

Something that seems fundamental to me about ChatGPT, which gets lost over and over again:

When you enter text into it, you're asking "What would a response to this sound like?"

If you put in a scientific question, and it comes back with a response citing a non-existent paper with a plausible title, using a real journal name and an author name who's written things related to your question, it's not being tricky or telling lies or doing anything at all surprising! This is what a response to that question would sound like! It did the thing!

But people keep wanting the "say something that sounds like an answer" machine to be doing something else, and believing it *is* doing something else.

It's good at generating things that sound like responses to being told it was wrong, so people think that it's engaging in introspection or looking up more information or something, but it's not, it's only, ever, saying something that sounds like the next bit of the conversation.

Looks like you can self-host Feishin itself, might be worth giving it a shot? If I resize its desktop window right now, the layout seems to be reasonably responsive.

I discovered Feishin (github.com/jeffvli/feis...) last week and it's essentially giving me a Spotify-like UX on desktop. Takes some work, but definitely worth it. I haven't settled on anything mobile-wise yet, but this is such a marginal use case for me that it might never actually happen.

Writing Code Is Fun I became a software engineer because writing code is fun. Thinking through hard problems, designing elegant solutions, seeing the things youโ€™ve built working for the first timeโ€ฆ these moments are all deeply satisfying, so why in the world would I ever surrender them to AI?

For the same reason I can dislike art when I find out the employees were overworked and underpaid.

Because I care about people.

"This story doesn't need a sandworm"

This is almost always wrong. Arguably, EVERY story benefits from adding a huge subterranean worm with quasi-mystical or semi-supernatural powers, or equivalent (similar to Moby Dick).

Obviously the bigger the worm, the more literary quality it adds.

Robin Williams' daughter, Zelda Williams, also recently slammed people who are making Al-generated videos of her late father, calling the clips "gross." She added, "To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough, just so other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop pup-peteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it."

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjรถkull to Ok (jรถkull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
