Unfortunately, I don't think their populism is "fake." Populism has a long history in this land, back at least to Bacon's Rebellion. And one key feature is its insistence that an unholy alliance of "elites" and underclasses are oppressing the Great Hardworking Middle classes.

This was a horrific disaster to deal with. We're on Day 9 with 90% restored, and there are still nearly 5000 outages affecting 22,000 customers. The big outages have been handled; these are local and scattered. But NES is headed by a woman, which these doofuses think explains all.

I think that has a lot to do simply with the fact that SW/Andor is about a tyrannical empire and courageous rebels, which fits the moment for opponents of the current regime. LOTR is more complicated, but its fans on the Right blatantly misread it as glorifying reaction.

You realize that several of those numbers are actual Shaker songs--e.g. "I Hunger and Thirst," "All is Summer," and "Pretty Mother's Home." No "chord progressions," because they're melodic-line only. And the lyrics are incantatory, not "simple-minded"--though quite deep on a closer look.

Is there evidence for any of these sweeping assertions? I've been reading down the thread and thus far I've only seen one specific example cited (and, yes, I'm really disappointed in Haidt).

Actually, many conservatives describe themselves as “classically liberal,” meaning limited government. A lot of them are anti-Trump now.

A note: Some commentators interpret "brothers and sisters" to mean only Jesus's followers. So it only obligates them to follow Matthew 25 in treating fellow Christians--as defined by them of course. On others they get a pass.

Which Democrat is saying he is? If anything, the leadership of the party is scared to death of the label--more so than, say, conservatives like Tom Nichols. This guy is confusing Democrats with the commenters on Bluesky.

People keep saying this, but the ICE guy isn't the pastor; he's an assistant on staff. I yield to no one in my disgust for those who confound tribal loyalty with Christian faith, but you have to consider that the people in the pews *might* be persuadable with good, faith-based argument.

The pastor they were objecting to is an assistant pastor, not the senior pastor.
