Of course it still has grades! What is this, some sort of new-age feel-goodery?

Of course it still has grades! What is this, some sort of new-age feel-goodery?
24.07.2025 20:02 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I still assign final grades, and I give copious feedback on where and how to improve. Numbers and letter grades donβt tell a student how to do better.
Ugh. This is such lazy writing.
Itβs hilarious because the first paragraph pretty well describes me, right up to the, βthey are fraudsβ and then literally everything that follows is a straw-person of the actually thoughtful pedagogical choices I make.
But also, my rejection of grades has nothing to do with βwho am I to judge?β
I actually pretty much exclusively use Garamond. And my jeans are blue, but cuffed, so.. you know. Trying too hard.

30.06.2025 02:52 β π 2018 π 507 π¬ 31 π 38Since January, Iβve written 38,811 words.
Theyβre pretty good words in what I take to be an interesting order.
Gotta keep going. October 1 is fast approaching.
Oh shit! Iβm here for it

Great writing music!

I have a productivity app that I use to track my writing time. While Iβm not always great about making sure I use it, itβs tracked 77+ hours of writing since Jan.
I have somewhere around 40k words, which puts me at ~519.5 words/hour.
Can I finish this book by September? We will see!
Be careful what you wish for!

20.04.2025 17:56 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I thought this would streamline my feedback process because I assumed few students would pick 5.
All but one of my students picked 5 this term.
Side note: I just spent 90 minutes on one paper.

09.04.2025 18:30 β π 8 π 2 π¬ 0 π 1I have a lot to say about that as a definition and purpose of higher ed, but Iβll let you read the rest of the chapter before I respond, as I suspect a lot of what Iβd say here has already been said in the second half of the chapter.

07.03.2025 00:57 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβve seen a handful of articles about how humanities programs need to focus on βpracticalityβ.
In 2017 I published a chapter arguing that a focus on practicality in higher ed is a mistake. It seems especially relevant right now

This is a great thread and I agree with all of it. Reviewing takes a ton of time but it's important work, even when I hate the paper I reviewed. Editors can confirm I send lengthy details about every decision and I'd be wracked with guilt not doing that. It's the entire point of the process!
06.03.2025 12:35 β π 8 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0Iβm a recent meta study, we scoured 2550 lists of things with which one fucks.
We found a number of things appearing on multiple lists & most things appeared at least once.
Conspicuously absent from *all* lists was the Wu Tang Clan.
We conclude that Wu Tang Clan is, in fact, nothing to fuck with.
As someone who has published many things that make interesting contributions to human knowledge, but who has VERY few citations, Iβm frustrated by this characterization

I'm one of those people who hear the words in their head as they read, but what really stands out to me is that I cannot help but hear all dialogue/narration in a Mid-Atlantic accent.
I think that makes it even more enjoyable, to be honest.

Not sure how I snuck in there, but if youβre free April 9, Iβd be happy to talk with you about how to teach students about the importance of citations and epistemic communities!
The student concluded that this shift doesnβt ultimately do much to change the interpretation, but wanted to make a note of it anyway just in case.
Thatβs so damn cool!! Iβd never noticed that before!
I have a lot to say about the shift, but for now I just want to brag about my students!
Iβm teaching early modern philo this semester and I have these weekly close-reading assignments. One of my students noticed a shift in pronouns between the Latin and French editions of Descartesβ Third Meditation (from 1st person singular to 1st person plural)!
