I really like this summary. There’s nuance in it.

Watching this, however, feels like one more area where there are obvious changes that need to be made and there seems to be no ability to make impacts as an individual citizen.

My father was an abusive narcissist. It’s just like listening to him hearing Trump speak. My feelings of helplessness are the same. Reasoning with his supporters is the same. The justice system’s remedy just as flacid. The lasting harm as inevitable.

Even if people are perceiving it as a joke, he’s joking about a sacred position to be held by somebody with humility and a commitment to God, of what he has neither.

I don’t understand how there hasn’t been an immediate and intense backlash from Catholics against Donald Trump imagining that he could be the pope. It is incredibly sacrilegious they should be outraged by the mockery.

Part of the danger is that this kind of leadership feels good to people who are also doubling down. It offers the comfort of certainty without the burden of reflection. But true strength lies in the courage to grow, not the refusal to listen.

Leaders like this always fail, but not before doing real damage to the people under their influence. We should expect more. We should demand more.

If the Pope corrects your understanding of compassion and doctrine and you still double down, it is not moral clarity, it is hubris.

When your decisions shape the lives of millions, that kind of hubris is not just a character flaw, it is dangerous.
