Making up for some recent inertia. Admin work hit my writing hard, to the point where I felt like I couldn't even remember how to do it. I kept talk about my ideas, doing the research, and giving off-the-cuff presentations, but I couldn't commit anything to the page.

Not a resolution (I started last Thursday), but I've been writing 2 pages per day and trying to stop at that amount to avoid burnout. I put in a little extra yesterday and today and finished a chapter for a book project.

Every time I start a new project, I'm amazed that I ever wrote anything, which is terrible considering how much I ask of my students. But I wrote 2 more pages today and trying to keep at it.

Really struggling with writing lately (i.e., last couple of years at least; or maybe last 20 years). I wrote 2 pages today and that feels like enough and it feels like a miracle.

Started to write a work email and then made myself look up the official holiday schedule. Campus is closed until January 2, which is also the first day of my vacation. So I deleted the email and will try to actually shut down until January 7.

Just watched Carry-On. It was pretty good! There is a high speed car scene that was... wow! Also, does Jason Bateman put it in his contract that he gets to say "buddy" and "pal"?

For folks in #HigherEd, while I don't like getting caught up in citation counts (Google scholar), it can be really interesting to actually read the work that cites you. Sometimes you may find full discussions of your work. You may also find that you have a multi disciplinary influence.

If student evaluations are a source of anxiety, consider letting ChatGPT (or another ai tool) summarize them for you. You will get information that removes tone and focuses on broad patterns rather than outliers.

Use column 3 for learning activities that guide the students towards the outcomes. This includes discussions, lectures, active learning strategies, readings, films, practice activities, etc.

Use column 2 for the assignments. These assignments assess whether students are progressing towards the outcomes (not necessarily achieving them. All of your outcomes should be measurable and therefore align with an assessment. All of your assessment should connect to an outcome.

Courses drift over time, usually for good reasons. The description should be updated periodically, which is a process you can start now for next year. #teaching

Take a look at the course description in the course catalog. This is what students see. Are you using this for your course? If not, how closely aligned is that description with your course? #teaching

Take a look at your course name as listed in the course catalog. Think about what student expectations for that name might be and how they differ from your intentions. How can you reset those expectations (or adjust your intentions) early on? #Teaching
