The Decline and Fall of the Canadian State (w/ Nora Loreto) How austerity and privatization have killed state capacity

Take a listen to my conversation with @arshy.bsky.social about why politicians seem to be incapable of doing anything -- aside from enriching their friends. Enjoy!

The post office doesn't need to turn a profit.
The fire department doesn't need to turn a profit.
The water filtration plant doesn't need to turn a profit.
We receive common goods and services in exchange for taxation and citizenship, it's a crazy new idea called "government"

Canada nation built (and built and built and built) until the 1970s, then began the great dismantling. I'd pin it to Mulroney era when rails were ripped out across country & Chretien/Harris pulling out of housing funding/backstopping. Canada Post stuff is just another dismantling moment.

Build Canada Homes must prioritize 'right' kind of housing, affordability and green energy, say advocates The Build Canada Homes initiative, which aims to double national housing output to 500,000 new homes per year, is expected to launch this fall.

I was glad to be interviewed for this piece about the federal govt's new home building agency, addressing affordability but also climate - which is important because buildings are so polluting

I said it's "a huge opportunity to build homes well from the start"💡

“Action would start with acknowledging that communities like Tuktoyaktuk will soon be climate refugees created by our collective failure... It would mean fully funding not just coastal protection, but culturally appropriate relocation… treating the climate emergency like an emergency.”

Excerpt from a pdf of today's print Globe:

After the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that triggered a nearly two-year siege on Gaza by Israel, Tamimi wondered whether he should change the narrative for the book, to make it more political. He stuck with the original plan – to fill it with dishes inspired by the produce of his grandparents’ West Bank garden – and has used his other platforms to call attention to the devastation in Gaza, particularly the forced starvation.

Ontario’s last election showed how millions of votes went unrepresented, letting one party govern without majority support.

With proportional representation, every vote helps shape the government and fake majorities become a thing of the past.

It's me! No, seriously, he's talking about me.

For a little while, I've done graphic design and written newsletter content for Ward 1 Councillor Maureen Wilson as an advisor.

This fact is set to become the "Conspiracy of the Day". What fun!

So here's what I have to say about that (thread below):

History doesn't repeat, but I think the advent of Fascism, much more than Nazism, offers a framework to understand how these regimes can install themselves step by step withing a flawed or weakened constitutional system by eroding the democratic safeguards bit by bit.

People changing their mind and speaking out on the horrors of Gaza is a good thing. But if a person “changing their mind” is in power, and they do not subsequently use that power in accordance with the seriousness of the new conclusion they have arrived at, then that’s a problem.
